WHERE are the ovaries lo-

cated?

The ovaries are oval-shaped glands about the size of a small plum. They are situated deep in the pelvis on each side of the womb, or uterus.

• * «

What Is the function of the

ovaries?

The ovaries are the “egg factories’* of the body. They produce ova, or eggs, that can be fertilized by the male sperm. In addition to this most important f u n c-

tion, the ovaries produce two special hormones. One is the estrogenic hormone which is responsible for the growth and maturity of the female. The other hormone, progesterone, works in combination with estrogen to prepare the lining of the uterus for the development and nourishment of the fertilized egg. These hormones are part of the network of body hormones that work in complete conjunction with each other.

* • •

Can a woman function in good health with only one

ovary?

Only one healthy ovary is needed to carry out all its normal functions. It can produce enough hormones to satisfy the needs of the body. It can produce enough eggs for normal pregnancy. And one ovary can adequately carry on the normal menstrual cycle.

* » *

What is an ovarian cyst? There are different kinds of ovarian cysts. When the egg leaves the ovary during ovulation, a small cyst may remain in its place. Usually, these tiny cysts shrink and disappear. Occasionally, the ovary develops a large mucous cyst.

This is the ovarian cyst that grows large and interferes with the health of the ovary and the patient. Ovarian cysts may sometimes become twisted and show all the symptoms of appendicitis. The two conditions can be confused if the right ovary is affected. The diagnosis is established by careful pelvic examination. This type of cyst is usually kept under regular periodic examination by the physician and the surgeon. If it grows, or seems to be compbcated, then the cyst is removed surgically. Sometimes it is necessary to remove the ovary as well. • * * When is it necessary to remove both ovaries? When the uterus is removed in women above the child-bear-ing age, both ovaries are usu|ally removed at the same time. When there is severe infection, cystic degeneration or a cancerous condition, the ovaries may be removed along with the other female pelvic organs. * * * What happens if a cyst of the ovary develops during pregnancy? Usually, the cyst can be safely removed without interfering with the normal birth of the

child.

This is done, however, only after great calculation, and after the fourth or fifth month of pregnancy. a e * SPEAKING OF YOUR HEALTH — Patients with high blood pressure should be under constant medical care in order to have the benefits of the new controlling drugs.
