14 The Daily Banner, Greencastle, Indiana Monday, November 22, 1965 A Ham And Cheese Sandwich That’s Really Different
It’s called Spiedino, Italian in origin, and is one of the most unusual ham and cheese sandwiches ever made. Pieces of bread are strung on a skewer alternating with ham and cheese. Then the skewered sandwich is batter dipped and fried in deep fat. Although the Italians sene it with a Caper Sauce, the recipo for which is given here, you also can serve it with tomato sauce. Spiedino 8 slices white bread pound cooked ham, cut J /2 pound Mozzarella or in 14-inch slices Muenster cheese, 1 recipe Batter thinly sliced Com oil for frying Tnm crusts from bread, then cut each slice in half. Cut slices of cheese and ham the same size as bread. Place on 4 or 5-inch metal skewers, in this order; bread, cheese, ham, cheese, repeatting the order three times and ending with a piece of bread. Dust skewered sandwich lightly with flour. Dip in batter; drain. Meanwhile, pour corn oil into a sturdy, flat bottomed kettle or deep fryer, filling utensil VS full. Heat over medium heat to 375 degrees F., or until 1 inch cube of bread turns brown in 40 seconds. Fry spiedino, turning as needed, until light golden brown on all sides. Drain on absorbent paper. Remove from skewers and serve hot with Caper Sauce, or any tomato sauce. Makes 4 servings. Batter: Sift Vi cup sifted flour and Vi cup corn starch together Into bowl. Stir in 1 cup water, then 1 egg. Beat with wire whip or rotary beater until smooth and frothy. Caper Sauce 1 tablespoon com oil 2 teaspoons Soy sauce 1 tablespoon corn starch 1 tablespoon capers 1 teaspoon sugar 1 tablespoon finely chopped % cup water parsley 1 bouillon cube Heat com oil in saucepan; add com starch and sugar, blend well. Gradually add water, mixing until smooth. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens slightly and comes to a boil. Add bouillon cube and soy sauce; bring to a boil again, stirring constantly, until bouillon cube is dissolved. Remove from heat; stir in capers and parsley. Serve warm over spiedino.
Red China May Be In On Next U. N. Vote
UNITED NATIONS, N. T. UPI—It was the consensus of U.N. diplomats after the vote on the China question that it may never again be possible to muster a vote to exclude Communist China from the United Nations. Communist China was barred for another year by the 47-47 tie vote. Had Peking obtained one more vote, it still would not have made it, because the General Assembly previously voted 56-49 to require a two thirds majority vote to decide the issue. The trend, as seen by most delegates, is toward recognition of Peking as the legal holder of China's U.N. seat. They consider it entirely possible that in 1966 the Assembly will decide that a simple majority is sufficient, and that Red China will be able to get it. The United States fought a successful, if not very encouraging. action this year to keep Peking out and Taiwan in. In the opinion of diplomats here, to argue that Washington could do it again next year would be to ignore several important signs. One sign is that Latin America is starting to drift away from U.S. policy on China. Chile took the unprecedented step, for a South American member, of abstaining from a vote to seat Red China. Other South Americans continued to vote against Peking. But Latin American sources said several favor a change in China policy.

Africa s swing toward Communist China presisted. Among the Africans, 23 voted for Red China, 10 for Nationalist China. 7 abstained, one was absent and one chose nto to participate. Nationalist China still had friends in Africa, partly because of a sincere feeling that Taiwan should not be summarily dismissed from the organization and partly because of charges thta Red China has engaged in subversive activities in certain African states. Pope Paul VI, oddly, did Red China a favor when he said in a speech here last month that the United Nations should be a universal organization. U.N. Secretary - General Thant gave Peking a similar assist by reaffirming his longheld convtcion that the United Nations can be fully efefctive only if Communist China is a member. Some countries friendly to the United States regarded Washington's unchanging China policy as one of expediency rather than of morality. They | believe further that this policy will change only when the United States feels it can no longer get general support for its po- , sition.
