Make Simple Plans To Bnng In Slams By Alfred Sheinw old ^"hen a man takes a sledge hammer to hit a mosquita, it is natural to snicker. When the man hits his thumb, you sigh sadly; the poor fellow reminds you of your bridge partners.

Declarer put up the queen of hearts at the first trick, covered by the king and ace. South led a spade to the ace and returned the nine of spades to ruff. East played a low spade without giving himself away. Smith got to dummy with a trump and ruffed another spade, for the third time. This time the king fell, so South could lead a trump to dummy's seven to get rid of his losing heart on the last spade. Declarer then led the ten of clubs from dummy for a finesse. West took the king of clubs and cashed a heart trick. South's pondreous plan to get rid of a heart was no good because It also got rid of all of his trumps. SIMPLE PLAN The slam is unbeatable If South adopts a simple plan. He wins the ace of hearts, draws two trumps, cashes the ace of spades and leads the queen of spades from dummy. If East plays the king. South ruffs. Declarer can then get to dummy with a trump to discard a heart and two clubs on good spades. The club finesse loses, but South still makes six. If East plays a low spade on dummy's queen. South discards his losing heart. The queen of spades wins, and South continues with the same plan. Even if West had the king of spades. South would be safe. He would have no further heart to
P.0. Dept Has 4.000 Hew Jobs WASHINGTON UPI —special Post Office Department task force was under orders today to make sure that about 4.000 new jobs in the department are filled “without regard to race, creed, color, sex or national origin.'' The jobs are opening up because of the 1965 retirement and salary acts, which encouraged early retirements and barred excessive overtime. Post- j master General Lawrence F. [ O'Brien said Tuesday that equal * employment opportunity would ; be the “unwavering’' policy of. his department in filling the jobs.
2 Arrested For Loan Co. Holdup FORT WAYNE UPI — Two men were arrested in Fort Wayne Tuesday in connection with the theft of about $300 from the Century Loan Company office near the downtown j area. William McCoy, 21, and Lawrence Hood, 18, were arrested ; on preliminary theft charges. Two others, Robert Warfield, 19. and John Warfield, 21, were picked up outside the loan office and held for questioning. Police said McCoy and Hood had been to the office earlier when McCoy applied for a loan. Authorities said they were seen leaving and carrying a bag which later turned out to be a »missing bag full of money. They returned later after McCoy had called the office and was told his loan had been approved. Judith Neff, 19, an employe, alerted police who greeted the suspect* when they returned.

This is the 20mm anti-tank cannon used in an attempt to rob a Brink's office in Quebec City last February. “A WELL PLANNED, PROFESSIONAL JOB" is the way police describe the robbery of a Brink's office in Syracuse, N.Y. The robbers used a 20mm anti-tank cannon to blast through a foot-thick concrete and steel vault wall. They got some $400,000, but only $100,000 in cash and negotiable paper. They left a half-million in coins.
