By Lyle Wilson Mayor-electe John V. Lindsay of New York City has another •tar in his crown, a blinding sparkler bestowed by the left wing political machine known as Americans for Democratic Action ADA. Republican Lindsay earned it with a straight ADA voting record. ADA announced the award to) Lindsay in its annual rundown of congressional voting records. In the first session of the 89th Congress. ADA selected 19 roll call votes as the basis for judging the political orientation of members of the House of Representatives. Each representatives was graded plus or minue on each vote. His overall record on the 19 roll calls determined what ADA calls the member'sal

“liberal quoaient for 1965.” On four of the 19 roll calls, Lindsay was absent. On the remaining 15 he was recorded each time as coting in harmony with ADA policies and principles. Fifteen left wing ADA plusses for the Republican mayor-elect of New’ York City! Impossible? Not at all. Nothing could be easier to accomplish. Lindsay runs for office as a Republican and votes ADA. Or to put it differently, he registers as a Republican and seeks office as the nominee of the very lefty Liberal Party of New York City. Lindsay had the 1965 Liberal nomination as well as the Republican nomination for mayor. For those of short memory, It must be stated that ADA was

(founded fcftef the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt to keep alive the spirit and objectives of the Roosevelt New Deal. Among the founding fathers and mothers were Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, whose name remains at the masthead of the ADA world magazine as an honorarychairman, Walter P. Reuther, James G. Patton of the far left Farmer’s Union, Robert R. Nathan, former CIO economist, and Vice President Hu-

bert H. Humphry.

ADA is as much a part of the

of the matter was that John Lindsay w’as a Republican in the main line of Republicans as it comes down from Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. The impression is being created by the libehral establishment that those who question Lindsay’s Republicanism are kooks whose most recent escapade u’as to kidnap the Republican Party in 1964 in behalf of Barry Goldw r ater. Maybe so. But how is it going to be if the Republican liberals kidnap

their party in 1968 or 1972 in

and in Grand Rapids, Mich., a lively controversy has raged. Political, social, legal, moral and philosophical arguments have flourished in every community and | have become a bitterly contested issue on every speaker's platform. The battle is still on. Lost in the Dr. Coleman maze of confusion is the true value of fluoridation. Why is fluoridation needed? The problem of dental decay is a massive one and is a real threat to the general health of all people. It is estimated that 95% of the total population of the United States develop mild to severe decay of the teeth before they reach adulthood. The Massachusetts Department of Health found “that the average child in their state at the age of 14 has already lost one tooth from caries (decay with infection) and has had four teeth filled and has seven other teeth that need filling.” Sad Picture If this finding is an index of the general dental health of our nation, it is indeed a sad pic-

ture.

Despite the emphatic educational campaigns for adequate diet, rigid hygiene and frequent brushings of the teeth, dental decay still runs rampant with forest fire fury throughout the

nation.

How can fluoridation prevent decay? Fluoride in natural water or when added to w’ater has been shown to protect the enamel of teeth by a complex

chemical action.

It also appears to have an

of 13 years of age. There was also an astonishing reduction of 89% of the number of missing teeth per child. These remarkable statistics parallel the results found in many other communities where fluoridation has been studied. Important Statement Is fluoridation safe? Intensive studies by the United States Public Health Sendee led the American Medical Association to issue a statement of importance. They said. “No evidence has been found to prove that continuous ingestion of water containing the equivalent of approximately 1 part per million of fluorine for long periods, by large segments of the population, is harmful to the general health. Mottling of the tooth enamel associated with this level of fluoridation is minimal. The importance of this mottling is outweighed by the caries-inhibiting effect of the fluoride. A continuing series of studies consistently shows that fluoridation is beneficial to teeth and even has positive value for the bones of the elderly.” Scientifically Tested The scientific statistics of fluoridation appear to be definite and undeniable. The social and legal and moralistic aspects of the problem have yet to be worked out to the complete satisfaction of all the factions involved. How each individual community handles the problem must depend on mature judgment based on real facts rather than on personal prejudice and

bias.

All children, adolescents and adults deserve the health ad-
