THROUGH THE NATIONAL WINDOW Courage Required to Fight With Dirksen on Filibuster
By Lyle Wilson By United Prtu Internotionai Much political courage is required of those U.S. Senators who pollow Republican leader Everett M. Dirksen in the filibuster to Protect American citizens against national compulsory unionism.
Such Senators invited reprisal on two fronts. Not merely do they offend organized labor. They also offend Lyndon B. Johnson. But all is not lost for those Senators who oppose compulsory unionism. These Senators seem to have in their corner the people. As
inearty as this reporter can discover, the national consensus j seems to be that this Congress should not tinker with the Taft- , Hartley's section 14-B, which ! permits states to forbid com- ! pulsory unionism. If the people of any state | prefer the unqualified right-to-work over compulsory unionism, section 14-B permits the state government to so order. Union ! leaders call this outrageous. LBJ supports them, apparently in payment for union votes in i 1964. As a member of Congress, Johnson was a mighty singer in the choir in praise of the TaftHartley Act—all of it.

Senators should remember the 1950 congressional elections when Harry S. Truman was bound to the union political machine as Lyndon B. Johnson is bound to it today. From 1947 onward, Truman opposed the TaftHartley Act. He voted it, aliging himself with the complaints of the union leaders that

The late Sen. Robert A. Tafti was coming up for re-election in I 1950. Truman and the union leaders decided to gang up on the author of the Taft-Hartley Act. Labor and the democrats mounted against Taft a monumental opposition. In his corner, Taft had the people. Truman never took a i worse licking than in his partnership effort with big labor to; unseat Taft. The senatar car- j ' ried every industrial county in the state of Ohio.
