Only Two Such Symbols Are Reportedly In Existence
SANTA FE N.M.—UP I— A Hebrew symbol for Jehovah is embedded in stone over the entrance to St. Francis Cathedral Archdiocese in New Mexico. Records show that only one other Catholic cathedral in the world—in Bulgaria—has a similar inscription. The story behind both inscriptions is the same.
Between 1866 and 1886. St. Francis Cathedral was built by archbishop John Baptiste Lamyi in Santa Fee. A tireless worker and a fierce collector of funds to build the cathedral Arch bishop La my tapped the purses of all Santa Fe merchants.. They traveled from town to town. headquartering in Santa Fe. Many of the mercants were
Jewish and had eema from eastern cities to trade with the Indians and ranchers along the Rio Grande. Legend has it the Archbishop imposed a tithing on all the merchants in Sante Fe to help build the church, regardless of their religious beliefs. But two Pewish brothers, gave more i than their required shares. The Archbishop, ordinarily a man with few friends, felt a • strong compahhion for the tu r o merchants. On The U. S. Farm Front
By Bernard Brenner WASHINGTON UPI—Johnson administration farm officials may cut the price support loan rate for com down to $1 a bushel next year, a 5-cent reduction from the 1965 support. If this cut is made — and many officials expect it — there is certain to be hot con-
troversy over steps to offset ; the reduction. Government supports on com and other feed grains are made up of two segments: The price support loan, and a direct price support payment to farmers. If the loan is reduced as exi pected there will be pressure; j for an offsetting increase in the j
direct payment. The Agriculture Department’s authority for reducing price support loans on feed grains Is contained in a section of the administration’s 1965 farm bill. The House gave its final approval this week. The new bill requires total support for feed grain producers who comply with acreage controls to total not less than 65 per cent of parity. But this requirement applies to the combined package of support loans and direct payments. The loan itself can be allowed to drop below 65 per cent of parity. For 1965, the average sup-
port loan of 61.05 a bushel was accompanied by a direct payment of 20 cents a bushel, a total support of S1.35. This is well above 65 per cent of parj ity, which currently w’ould be about |1.03 for com. Congressional farm leaders who drafted the final version of the new farm bill say the change allows the secretary of I agriculture to lower the present loan and increase the pres- ■ ent support payment. ! But Agriculture Department officials say they have not mad any decision yet on what to do about support payments if the support loans are reduced.
The Agriculture Department predicts that the American feed grain industry Wdll crash the ‘’billion dollar export j club” before the end of the 1965-66 fiscal year. In the 1964-65 year, ending last June 30, exports of American feed grains reached ,a total i of $978 million. This year the total is expected to pass the $1 billion mark.
