Moments later, the man was back — a five-inch switchblade knife in his hand. He plunged the knife into Collins’ heart. The young father fell dead in front of his wife and baby. The killer escaped. A force of 200 police has pursued a continuous search for the knifer — so far to no avail. One of the voices raised in praise of Collins was that of John J. Gilhooley, acting chairman of the city’s transit authority. Gilhooley called on the city council and the state legislature to provide “adequate compensation” for the families of men who are permanently disabled or killed trying to protect their fellow men, as was "the brave Arthur Collins.”

A few months ago, one of our largest national magazines ran an excellent article telling about Opal mining in Australia. No doubt many people who read it know have a new appreciation for this beautiful gem. Each stone is unique in coloring and pattern. Truly, no two are alike. The play or color lends fascination to the Opal and it is one of our loveliest gems for ring and pendants.
NEW CASTLE UPI -
Jimmie Lee Mincks, 35, a career soldier from New Castle, was killed by a sniper's bullet on a mission with the 101st Airborne Division in Viet Nam Monday, relatives have learned. An official Defense Department message informed Mrs. Bessie Mincks of New Castle of her son’s death. Mincks, a native of Cowan, was the father of six children. Opal is composed of a solid form of gelatinous silicu deposited by a water solution in cracks of rocks. The Opal mined in Australia is mainly the precious black variety exhibiting plays of color in blue and green with flashes of red and yellow against a dark background.
To protect Opal, which is not considered one of our tougher gems, the mounting should be built up around it. Most often diamonds are employed to form ; a "wall” around the stone. Usually, Opal is cut cabochon, which means an oval dome without facets. The merician or fire Opal is sometimes facited to add greater fire to the stone.
According to old legends, wearing an Opal is said to bring good luck while turning away wrath. It is the birthstone for October (together with Tour-1 maline) and lucky indeed is the person celebrating their birthday this month who has an Opal to gaze upon.
Q. Where does it eome from? How Is it identified?
A. It comes from the brisket section of beef, which is in the forequarter, below the chuck. This is a large boneless cut composed of layers of fat and lean and is sold as fresh or corned beef. The term “corned” is used to indicate the meat has been cured in brine.
South Sid* of Squor* GreencattU, Ind.
Q. How is it prepared? A. By cooking in liquid. Fresh brisket is frequently browned before cooking, corned beef brisket is not. It’s placed in a large utensil and cooked, covered with water. Herbs, spices and vegetables are added, if desired, but bo salt, when cooking corned beef. Cover the utensil and simmer (keep below boiling temperature) until tender. If desired, the beef brisket may then be placed on a rack, covered with a glaze and baked in a moderate oven (350° F.) until the glaze sets, about 30 minutes. It may, however, be served hot or cold. Slice thin ior serving.
