Minimum Suit Rebida Ask Partner To Pass By Alfred Shelmvold "You have to write a column about sign-off bidding.” one of my friends growled after he had gone down one in the hand shown today. "Some partners wouldn’t recognize a sign-off bid if they fell over one in the middle of Times Square at high noon!”

He would be happy If everybody went away and let him play the hand at a part score. South was right, and North was wrong, but South was so annoyed at his partner’s overbidding that he forgot to make his lucky game contract.
and the the
South won the first trick with the ace of diamonds, drew trumps and gave up a spade. Blast returned the ten of clubs to ! dummy’s ace, and South peevishly showed his hand, conceding down one. LUCKY HAND It was a lucky hand, South should have made contract. After vanning first trick with the ace of diamonds South should return a
; spade.
East wins and returns the ten ! of clubs to dummy’s ace. South ruffs a spade and leads a low heart to try a finesse with dummy’s nine of hearts. Shis "unnessary” finesse gives declarer the extra entry to dummy that he needs to develop and cash i a spade trick. South ruffs another spade, leads a heart to the king, and ruffs spades for the third time. Then he draws West’s jack of
hearts.
Now South is in position to lead a diamond to dummy’s king andcash the last spade as his tenth trick. , Good bidding will usually get you to reasonable contracts, but good play of the cards is the ! basic equipment of a bridge
j player.
