Correct Trump Play Guarantees Contract By Alfred sneimvold “That's a hand for your column.'’ John Fourness remarked to me during the national team championship a few weeks ago. The Wisconsin expert was calling attention to a hand that somebody else at the table had misplayed during a close battle between our teams.

South won the first trick with the ace of clubs and led out the ace and king of headts. The queen did not drop, but South was not yet down. Declarer led a diamond and tried a finesse with dummy’s queen. East won with the king of diamonds and drew a round of trumps with the gueen of hearts. South could ruff only one diamond now. and when the jack of diamonds failed to drop he was down. South made his mistake in the play of the trump suit, as Fourness pointed out. The right trump play would guarantee the contract. SHOULD FINESSE After taking the ace of clubs and one high trump. South should try the diamond finesse. East wins with the king of liamonds and returns a club to dummy’s king. Now declarer leads the jack of hearts from dummy and lets it ride for a finesse. When the finesse wins. South
is home. In fact, if the oppon-* p ■ ents are not carefuw he may vCIlilOlfC tflCSf
even make an overtrcik.
The point is that South is safe even if the trump finesse happens to lose. In that case there will be no trumps out, and declarer will have two trumps in dummy for his two losing diamonds. It isn’t often that you can take a finesse and be safe whether the finesse wins or loses. DAILY QUESTION As dealer, you hold: S-A 7 5 4 H-J 10 6 5 D-A Q.C-K 5 4. What do you say? ANSWER: Bid one club. You don’t really have a camfortable rebid if you open with one spade or one heart: becides which it seldom pays to open with a weak 4-card suit. You will have no rebid problem if you open with one club.

A distinctive roof line is featured on two new Thunderbird models for 1966. the Town Landau, top, and the Town Hardtop. Both cars offer an elegant “town car” look as contrasted with convertibles and the traditional and more sporty Thunderbird roof line continued on 1966 Thunderbird bardtops. New sportiness is reflected in the styling of all 1966 Thunderbirds and in availability of an optional 428-cubic-inch performance engine. Other new options include a Stereosonic tape player integrated- into the radio in the center console., and fingertip automatic Highway Pilot speed control integrated into the steering wheel. An overhead console containing door-ajar warning light, fasten-seat-bell warning light, emergency flashers and low-fuel warning light is standard on all “Town” models. All 1966 Thunderbirds will he in Ford dealer showrooms October 1.
Birth Control Review Urged VATICAN CITY UPI — An Italian archbishop, voicing the concern of many Ecumenical Council fathers, urged Wednesday that the Catholic Church’s j review of its birth control position “not be dragged out any longer.” Pope Paul VI has a special commission established in 1964 working on possible reforms of the church's traditional ban on all artificial means of birth control. The commission has been divided in several meetings so far and no decision has been reached yet. The touchy subject came up during debate “On the Church in the Modern World.” which has a section on marriage and the family. The document avoids settling the issue but opens the way to change by approving “responsible parenthood” among Catholics. Archbishop Giuseppe Amici of Modena, Italy, told the 2,500 prelates gathered in St. Peters Basilica, “the question of birth control should not be dragged out any longer but a solution found as soon as possible.” Canadian Archbishop Maximos Hermaniuk, a Ukrainian Rite prelate, objected that the modem world document contradicted itself on the birth control issue. He said that alparenthood” it made no provisions for Catholics to carry this out since they have to simply obey the church’s birth control
ban.
Twelve prelates spoke in all, generally making critical repositiveness, the bad Latin and the “false optimism” of the document.
