ball game as both teams failed to enter the sacred TD area. In the third quarter of the gridiron encounter, Gerstmeyer's ace fullback Tom Brewer and quarterback Bob Rowe staged a two man drive that took the Blackcats from their own 20 to the Tiger Cub 11. On a short screen play Rowe fired a short pass over the defensive heads to Brewer who toppled to the Greencastle 11 before Churchill finally flung him to the ground. In the next play Blackcat quarterback Row'e literally spread his wings and flew over the defense to score the first touchdown of the game. That was 23 short of the record 2,627 posted in 1958 by former Olympic marksman Harry Reeves of the Detroit Police Department. DePauw Tigers Host Alma College In Season Opener at 2 Tomorrow

After three weeks of tuning and tinkering, DePauw’ football coach Tom Mont exposes his squad to the acid test at 2 p.m. tomorrow in Blackstock Stadium. Alma College's question mark Scots have drawm the opening exercises with the Tigers. Approximately 3,000 are expected for the game. Sophomores Eric Lortz (Raleigh, N. C.) and Don Breckenridge (Blue Island, HI.) are still engaged in a duel for the quarterback nod. Breckenridge has impressive passing credentials going for him—30 of 60 tries and 447 yards as a freshman. Lortz, called by Mont the team’s best all-around athlete, runs w’ell and elusively. Regardless of who gets the ceremonial honors of opening, both are certain to play for both are inexperienced in varsity play and neither is fully familiar yet with DePauw's offense.

Accordingly, the Montsters will stick with a small list of plays, hoping what they have cooked up for the Scot defense will produce. Mont expects to stick with experienced letter men elsewhere in the backfield. Greencastle s Mike Burns and Rick Jordan, Richmond, are his choices for halfbacks. Agile Tod Eberle will go at fullback, rounding out a backfield averaging around 177 pounds. Two absences have cropped up to throw’ a crimp into a once-rosy outlook on the line. A knee injury has dumped senior defensive tackle Ralph Larsen (238 pounds) out until at least Oct. 2. And co-captain— middle guard Terry Johnston has gone home for a medical check up. Hopefully, he'll be back to meet Alma. With this twosome out, the Tigers are left W’ith lettermen Dan Hasbrook, Indianapolis end. and Ed Gardner, Bloomington tackle, keying the de-

fensive unit. A batch of aggressive sophomores and a pair of transfers will take up the slack. Dave Lamont (Evansville) has been put in at middle guard, Rog Galvin (LaGrange, HI.) and Doug Joyce (Marion) are going for the other end spot, and Cornell U. transfer 220pound, 6-2 Ray Arvay of Hammond is at tackle. Sophomores sprinkle the defensive backfield. John Douglass (Chicago) and Eric Robertson (Granite City, 111.) six foot, 190 ponders, have been picked as linebackers. Going both ways, Jordan, Burns and Eberle wall be joined by standout sophomore Tom Boese farther back. Last year's leading pass receiver, Tom Cooper of Sullivan, and 220-pound plus tackles Bill Fox (Winnetka, 111.) and Mark Moore (Connersville) figure to balance inexperience in the Tigers’ offensive line. Juniors Steve Barr (190, Arlington, Va.) and John Adlard

(205, Piqua, O.) have the guard assignments. Sophomore Jerry Barton (205), Maywood, 111.) is set at center, and his 6-1, 195pound classmate Dick Walker from Gentryville, will play end opposite Cooper. This week the Tigers have had their noses in their play books, cramming in offensive plays and defensive assignments. Over in the kicking department, Mont is ready to tap two more sophomores for punt and kickoff return duties if regular Chuck Byrum isn't healthy. John Butler, all-stater at Southport, and Bill Lehman, West Lafayette, are on deck. ,‘Tt will be a wild and wooly ball game,” predicts Mont. “My early season optimism was based on w’hat I thught W’ere 27 fine sophomores as well as a proven group of lettermen. If the sophomores stay poised and remember their jobs, then I think we might get the job done an done well.”
