Many Hunters Heart Victims INDIANAPOLIS UPI —The. Indiana Department of Na- ! tural Resoudrces said today more hunters fall victim to heart attacks than to gun ac-! cidents, It issued a list of suggested rules, most imjortant of which was that persons with heart conditions should never | hunt alone. The advisory was aimed hiefly at deer hunters who won’t see action until Novem-! ber. But it could apply to hunters regardless of the j game they seek. “Hunters with a known heart condition should have a complete physical check-up before their hunting trip so that their doctor can recommend ways in which to pace themselves in order to minimize the strain on their hearts," a news release said. “During the hunt, take plenty of short rests and avoid unnecessary exertion. Hunt at a steady, unhurried pace. Don’t strain yourself in emergencies. Get your partner to help. “Keep an eye on the weather. Don’t try to do much in hot, weather. Make sure that at least one member of the party knows of your condition, the

medicine you take and how it is admin istehed. “Never hunt alone. If you get that lucky shot and bag a deer, wait for help to get it out of the woods."

When this hand came up in the Chicago-Los Angeles match a few weeks ago, five hundred kibitzers were watching every bid and play on an electrical display board. They could see all

of tlie cards, but

could see only their own cards

and the dummy.

East craftily played the king of diamonds at the first trick, giving South the impression that West had the queen of diamonds. South ruffed and tried a finesse with the ten of Clubs,

losing to the king.

East returned the ace of diamonds, and South ruffed again. Now South led the ace of spades and started on the clubs. He was safe if East had the queen of spades or if West had

three clubs.

RUFFS EARLY As luck would have it, Westj ruffed the third club and returned a low heart. The contract depended on which heart declarer played from the dum-

my.

Everybody in the audience would have played the king of hearts from dummy, but it wasn’t so easy for Bob Hamman, the Los Angeles expert who played the South hand. If he guessed right,, everybody in the audience would ask, “What took you so long" Hamman thought West held the queen of diamonds as well as the queen of spades. If West also held the ace of hearts, surely he would have entered the bidding. It was all very logical. so Hamman played the low heart from dummy and went down one. It’s at a time like this that you know who your friends are. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with one heart, and the next player passes. You hold: S-Q 5 H-A 9 6 5 3 D-9 7 6 4 C-7 4. What do you say? ANSWER: Bid two hearts, despite the trump length, this is a very poor hand. All you can afford is the simple raise to two hearts.
