The search for a pair of defensive ends has boiled down to Indianapolis junior Dan Hasbrook (Cathedral) and four other candidates on DePauw University’s football squad. ; Senior Doug Joyce of Marion, junior Dick Meredith, Crossett, Ark., and sophomores Andy Hess, Dayton. O., and Roger

Jets Star Yet to Debut
By Jeff Meyers • When your opening act falls flat, your star watches from the j^ings and a former member of your troupe gets rave reviews, y ell, that's show business. * Sonny Werblin. a veteran thow business magnate and owner of the New York Jets, faw his team literally fumble away a 27-21 decision to the flouston Oilers Sunday in the American Football League opener for both teams. » “Louis B. Mayer built the jnighty M-G-M film studio on
the star system; Werblin once remarked; “It’s a lesson that has stuck with me.” Werblin learned his lesson well. The Jets drafted Joe Namath, who has that star quality "when he walks into a room” and also has $400,000 Werblin reportedly paid to get him. Whether or not he has star quality when he walks onto a football field has not as yet been determined. Namath stood on the sidelines at Houston and watched bargain-basement a TV set
bonus quarterback Mike Taliaferro direct the Jets for the entire game. On the same day, a New York cast-off, Dick Wood, the quarterback who suddenly became expendable when Werblin drafter Namath and John Huarte, came off the bench to lead the Oakland Raiders to a decisive 37-10 victory over Kansas City at Oakland. In AFL season-openers Saturday night, the Buffalo Bills whipped the Boston Patriots and the San Diego Chargers nipped the Denver Broncos 3431.

well in his new environment as one of the Tigers’ two ace defensive tackles. Early-starting classes drove the Tigers off a two-a-day practice schedule Wednesday. It wall stay that way for the duration of the season. Mont says the ’65 squad, particularly the linemen, has undergone a harder conditioning schedule this year than any he’s ever had at DePauw. “If they shape up and we don’t go too fast, we’re going to come along this fall. We’re trying to bring the team along slow, be fundamentally sound, and work out a limited offense.” With 54% of his squad sophomores, Mont knows whereof he speaks. Mont still seems fairly well satisfied with his two passminded sophomore quarterbacks, Eric Lortz and Dan Breckenridge. What they’ll do under battle conditions plus the fact they’ll have a lot of backfield sophomore company remains to be seen though. Sophomores who are elbowing their way into contention for backfield posts include Bill Lehman, West Lafayette; John Butler, Indianapolis; Percy Hargrove, Gary; and Tim Feemster, Lake Forest, 111. This week, providing the weekend’s dress rehearsal scrimmage doesn't turn up too many new problems, Mont will work on the Tigers’ kicking game and polish up the offense. Starting tackle Bill Fox, temporarily out with a sprained ankle, may help out the punting game unexpectedly. Fox has been handed the centering chores. His ability to zoom the ball deep to the kicker has compensated for slowly executed punts. The arrival Monday of guard Joel Fischer of Clinton from Marine camp has shoved the Tiger strength to 50 men, 27 of them sophomores.
