Residents of low-lying districts at Lake Pontchartrian in New Orleans remained trapped for the second day by high flood waters. The Coast Guard called out an extra 100 men to help save them. National Guardsmen In amphibious “ducks” rode to houses and chopped holes in roofs to bring out men, women and children, some of them so petrified with fright that they struggled against their rescuers. “We had to pass an elementary school whose second floor was full of humanity,” reported UPI corres pendent Edward Cocke after a ride through the flooded district near St. Claude Ave. “We had to pass them up. Other people farther on were in worse trouble.”

4 YOUR HEALTH.
By LESTER L. COLEMAN, M.D.
Dizziness Has Many Causes
I HAVE been embarrassed several times by a sudden feeling of dizziness and imbalance. When the attack comes on, I stagger as if I were drunk and grasp for the wall of a building or a telephone pole. I do not drink alcohol. I admit I am generally a nervous person. Can ; this be the X cause? Mrs. E. K., Pennsylvania Dear Mrs. K: The embarrassment is just an incidental reason for you to seek medical Pr. Coleman attention. Nervousness and emotional tension are rarely the underlying causes of dizziness. More often the nervousness tends to make the temporary “attack” worse. The causes for loss of equilibrium are many. Some are important, most others are not important. The ''exact reason must be found before any treatment can be started. Fortunately, the less serious reasons for loss of equilibrium are far greater than the serious ones. Low and high blood pressure can both be a reason. A high ( intake of salt and fluid can also cause it. Incidentally, people on a restricted salt diet often do not know that carbonated drinks contain large quantities of the sodium salt that they seek to eliminate. Menieres Hisease is a highly specialized reason for dizziness. This condition is far more rare than is commonly suspected. Attacks of mild or severe dizziness must not be attributed to this condition without complete neurological and hearing studies.
There are undoubtedly some very serious brain conditions that can produce dizziness. Not to mention their possibility is to neglect their existence. They do occur, %rut so rarely in comparison to the simple reasons for dizziness that fear of a nonexistent condition must not terrify people. A wholesome respect for any troublesome complaint should bring the patient to the doctor. Reactions to drugs such as sleeping pills, antihistamines, antibiotics and tranquilizers can cause a temporary feeling of imbalance. Eve conditions of a wide variety can also be responsible. An imbalance of the eye muscles, outmoded and inadequate eye glasses are common causes. Ear infections with chronio discharge from the middle ear are an important cause of dizziness. Arteriosclerosis, a spasm of the blood vessels or too rapid changes of positions can all cause imbalance and vertigo. And these are only a few of the possible causes. Now, are these conditions listed to induce terror and additional anxiety? Most certainly not. The purpose is to emphasize the need for people to find the real reason for any symptom. The social embarrassment you occasionally feel may be the blessing that will now Indue* you to seek the help and treatment for the underlying condition. While Dr. Coleman cannot undertake to answer individual letters, he will use readers? questions in his column when, ever possible and when they are of general interest. Address your letters to Dr. Coleman in care of this newspaper.
