The Daily Banner, Greencastle, Putnam County, 10 September 1965 — Page 2

1 Th« Daily Banner, BreancaatU, Indiana Friday, Saptambar 10, 1965 Editorial-Wise That Gen. DeGaulle President Charles de Gaulle has warned that Franca will end ita "aubordination" to ita NATO allies by 1969 at the latest. De Gaulle has not threatened to pull France out of NATO but he is making it clear that he will demand sweeping changes in the North Atlantic Treaty when it comes up for renewal four years from now. He charges that the “subordination" places the destinies of France "in the hands of foreigners.” He did say that France believes a Western alliance for the defense of Europe will be necessary for a long tima to come. Evidently, the General feels that his country and the other West Europe nations can get along without the United States and its economic and military might. In this aspect. Gen. De Gaulle apparently stands alone. It is doubtful that the majority of Frenchmen share his opinion. He still has not announced whether he plans to run for a second seven-year term in December. His position as to NATO could have a strong bearing, if he should run, on victory or defeat at the hands of the French voters.
