. RICHMOND UPI — Mrs. Michael Couch froze wdth fear when she looked out the window of her home and saw her 2-year-old son, Duane, 15 feet up a television antenna tow r er and still climbing. “Hang on, Duane,’’ she called. He did, until Bill Dennis, a neighbor, climbed up a ladder and rescued him.

Lonely Boy, 13 Takes Own Life LEBANON UPI — At 13, Billy Leath found it difficult to adjust to life. He was a fragile lad, of slight build and only 4 feet 6 inches tall. According to Sheriff Jim McConnaha, the boy’s mother left home years ago and hasn’t been heard from since. When Billy was 8, he became a ward of Boone Circuit Court and since then had lived in “many” foster homes. Billy found It easy to get in trouble. He had made a number of appearances before Juvenile

Judge Charles F. Thompson, usually for running away from home and other minor offenses. About a year ago, he was placed in the foster home of Zionsville Night Marshal Earl Mankin. He seemed to get along well with the Mankins and was doing well in school. But last week, Billy stole a

car.

He didn't go for a joyride or anything. He simply drove up to the Boone County Jail, walked in and handed the ignition key to McConnaha and said he wanted to be locked up. | McConnaha obliged, and plans ! were made to take Billy before | the judge for another appear-

: attending a jurists’ convention, | and the appearance had to be | postponed until today. On Monday, Deputy Sheriff John Denney served Billy a Labor Day dinner in a secondfloor juvenile detention cell where he was locked up alone with only a few comic books ; for company. Billy asked Denney for a pencil and some paper. He seemed in good spirits, Denney said. When jailers brought the evening meal to Billy, they found him hanging by a towel from a cell bar, his tennis shoe-clad ; feet barely off the floor.

He was dead.

ance. But the judge w’as away The pencil and paper lay

nearby. There was a note on the paper. Dr. Ritchie Coons, county coroner, declined to reveal the text of the note. “The theme was centered around the thought that he didn’t belong anywhere,” Coons said. Authorities said Billy had no | visitors during the week he was ; in jail. His father, a Lebanon ; bartender, came to call on him i once hut was turned away because it was not during regular visiting hours at the jail. | “Billy was a bright boy when . he wanted to be,” McConnaha ! said. “I’ve known him since he j was a child. He wasn’t a bad | boy, just lost. All he wanted i was somebody to want him. The
