May Be Gold In Sunken Ships OAKLAND, Calif. UPI — ! Some say that when the transpacific liner Rio de Janerio sank in San Francisco Bay $2 million in silver bars went with j her. The possibility of finding the bullion, and $75,000 in gold that may have been on board, | has beckoned treasure divers ever since that day in 1901. The latest diver to attempt to find the possibly mythical millions is A. A. Mikalow, a J former Navy Commander and longtime deep sea diver. But before he can find the treasurer, Mikalow must first : find the Rio, which went down j somewhere near Fort Point. “All these things point di-, rectly in the Rio de Janeiro.” Milkalow declared confidently as he motioned to salty mementoes in his office. His displayed a huge steam gauge, several pieces of carved wood and some hard white substance that might be opium. A chart he had was marked with three crosses off the west-! em shore of Angel Island. Within a triangle of a mile, I have located the Rio, the river steamer H. J. Cochrane, which turned turtle in 1911 dropping j its engines and $96,000 in bullion, and a third unidentified wreck”, he said. Mikalow, well aware that the j Rio’s manifest never listed any ! treasure, bases much of his con- i fidence in the words of William I I. Madeira, former assistant | postmaster in Honolulu at the time of the Rio sinking. “Maderia told me that he had personally watched the loading; of $75,000 in gold for San Fran- , cisco,” Mikalow said. "He was explicit that while j checking his own shipment he saw, and actually touched, some of the $2 million in Chinese sil- ; ver bars that covered the floor' of the Dio’s strongroom.” Mikalow said he will start his search for the Rio after he j completes a salvage job off the ; coast of Mexico and a hunt for ; six treasure-laden galleons of Ecuador
