On The Farm Front WASHINGTON UPI—Sharply lower prices for potatoes caused farm prices to drop 1 per cent during the month ended August 15, the Agriculture Department reported Monday. Increases for wholesale milk, oranges, hogs, and eggs were not enough to stave off the decline. Potato prices in mid-August averaged $2.57 per hundredweight. They were $2.25 below the average for mid-July, reflecting a substantial increase in marketings of the late summer and fall crops. Sweet potato prices in mid-August were down $1.17 per hundredweight from a month earlier. The drop in over-all farm prices put the farm price index 8 per cent above that of midAugust, 1964. Farm costs for the month were down two-thirds of 1 per cent and left the farm cost index nearly 3 per cent above that of a year earlier. The parity ratio for the month was unchanged at 78 per cent, but compared with 74 per cent a year earlier. Parity is the price needed to put the value of commodities sold by farmers on a par with the cost of things they must buy — theoretically, a fair return for their products. Average hog prices for the month were $23.80 per hundredweight, up 70 cents from July and up $8 from mid-August, 1964. Average beef cattle prices for the month were $20.80 per hundredweight, down 40 cents from a month earlier but $2 above those of a year ago.

Ice has long been regarded U. S. Navy and Air Force
and Trust
upon to handle minor
burns, insect stings, cuts, splinter removals, sprains or bruises, a knowledgeable use of the ice cube as instant first
d is extremely valuable. One of its greatest assets, as
any mother will testify, is its appeal. Children love ice. Therefore, its use as a soothing balm for youngsters’ minor injuries makes mother's job of attending to these everyday emergencies easier. Fortunately, with the efficient ice-making meth-
of today's refrigerator-
freezers — some ice trays (GE) even fill themselves automatically — mothers can always be assured of an abundance of ice
cubes.
Here are some “ice-First Aid” pointers recommended by
Dr. Witten:
— To relieve the painful sensation that usually accompanies the removal of a splinter, first rub over the area with an ice cube until it becomes numbed. —For mild hand burns, where skin is unbroken and no blisters appear, place hand into bowl of cold water to which ice cubes have been added. For a finger or other small areas, place an ice cube directly over the burned area until it no longer hurts when the cube is removed. As a result, there will usually be very little swelling, no blisters. — Ice also offers first aid for the rough and tumble of children’s games. When a shin is kicked, a sprain occurs, or an eye bruised, applying ice cubes instantly over the injured area will help constrict blood vessels and thus control bleeding.
