The Cubs, won the nightcap 54 on Don Landrum's two-out, two-run homer off Billy McCool in the ninth inning. Leo Cardenas’ home run broke up Larry Jackson’s pitching duel with Maloney in the opener and gave the 25-year-old fastballer his first victory in a no-hitter. York Mets on June 14 but lost when Johnny Lewis hit a homer for the Mets in the 11th. He thus became the first pitcher ever to hurl two extra-inning no-hitters. Maloney, relying mainly on a blazing fast ball and sharp breaking curve, struck out 13 Cubs and issued 10 bases on balls. He also hit a batter. Maloney did not allow a ball to be hit out of the infield until Doug Clemens flied to center fielder Vada Pinson in the eighth. Jimmie Stewart also filed to Pinson in the ninth. Maloney filled the bases with three walks in the third inning but got out of the jam by getting Billy Williams to bounce out to Pete Rose. The Cubs threatened again in the eighth and ninth. Jackson walked to open the eighth, advanced to second on a sacrifice and moved to third on Clements’ fly. Maloney struck out

Maloney, who registered his 14th victory against six losses, thus became the first pitcher to hurl two nine-inning nohitters in the same season since Virgil Trucks pitched two nohitters for the Detroit Tigers in 1952. The only others to accomplish the feat were Allie Reynolds of the 1951 New York Yankees and Johnny Vander Meer of the 1938 Cincinnati Reds. Vander Meer pitched his in succession.

Kaatand Grant Pitching Twins to Pennant Win

By United Pr«»i International Jim Kaat and Jim Grant have been fighting losing battles all season against the occupational hazards of the pitching profession and all the while leading the Minnesota Twias to the American League pennant. Kaat, the strapping 26-year-old southpaw, has had trouble for much of the season with tendonitis in his forearm, and Grant, in addition to a case of tendonitis in his knees, has been throwing gopher balls at an alarming rate. Both pitchers, however, have triumphed over adversity to such an extent that they each are experiencing their finest season in the major leagues and anchoring the injury-rid-dled Minnesota staff. Kaat. who missed only one turn during the worst siege of the injury and occasionally made extra appearances to alleviate the Twin pitching shortage, earned his 12th victory of the season Thursday in the secong game of a crucial doubleheader with the Detroit Tigers 2-1 after Grant had gone all the way to win the opener 8-3.

The victory for Grant was his 16th, the tops in the AL and his best total in an eight-year major league career. Whot makes it all the more remarkable is that Grant allowed two more home runs for a total of of the majors. Elsewhere in the American. League, the Boston Red Sox' blasted the Baltimore Orioles 11-3 and the Yankees edged the Angeles 3-1. No other games w'ere scheduled in the junior circuit. Jim Maloney of the Cincinnati Reds pitched the first no-hit-ter of the season as he hand cuffed the Cubs 1-0 in a 10-in-ning first game victory before Chicago rallied to take the nightcap 5-4. Los Angeles scored three rluns in the 15th inning to defeat the Giants 8-5 and regain first place and the Cardinals nudged the Braves 5-4 in the only other National League action. Grant, a retreat acquired from the Cleveland Indians last year w r ho since has developed a winning curve ball, served up homers to Norm Cash in the fifth and Don Demeter in the ninth, but he had more than

enough batting support from Don Mincher and Rich Rollins, w-ho crashed successive homers in the third inning foi four runs. Tiger star A1 Kaline suffered a tom rib cartilage in the first stanza of the first game when he attempted a divine catch of Earl Battey’s double and is expected to be out for three or four days. Detroit also lost its hold on second place, falling into a three-way tie for third, nine games off the Twins’ pace. Rookie pitcher Jim Lonborg pitched and batted the Red Sox to their victory. The tall righthander doumbled home the two decisive runs in Boston’s tiebreaking three-run rally in the fourth frame and pitched his w r ay out of a base-loaded jam in the ninth for his eighth win. Mel Stottlemyre continued to dog Grant for the AL lead In victories by earning his 15th triumph of the season with an eight-hit effort against the Angeles. It marked Stottlemyre’s 13th complete game, tops in the league. Clete Boyer led off the seventh inning with a homer that broke a 1-1 tie and insured the victory.
