By Pred Down CPI Sports Writer The “big bats’’ are closing in on the Los Angeles Dodgers— I and could it be that one half of ; the Dodgers’ great 1-2 pitching combination Is begining to feel the strain ? Both the Milwaukee Braves and the San Francisco Giants picked up a full game on the Dodgers Sunday but even more important may be the fact that Don Drysdale suffered his third loss in four decisions. If there’s one thing the Dodgeds need to fend off the big bats of their rivals it’s their brilliant pitching. Sandy Koufax. who notched his 21st victory Saturday night, seems to be standing up under the pressure, but Drysdale shows unmistakable signs of being tired. The “Big D’’ of the Dodger staff has pitched only two complete games in his last six starts. He had an imposing 15-8 record on July 19 but it now stands 6-11. He’s been the losing pitcher in the Dodgers' in last three defeats and he hasn’t beaten a first-division team since July 6. Drysdale was tagged for nine hits and four runs in six innings Sunday when the Pittsburg
By Jeff Meyers CPI Sports Writer Washed up? Not the Cleveland Browns, who are continuing where they left off last season when they won the National Football League championship. Critics, predicting a Cleveland downfall this year, have called veteran quarterback Ryan a “one-year wonder,” have rumored that fullback Jimmy Brown's legs are not what they used to be. and have ridiculed the Browns defense.
I Cleveland added fuel to the fire by putting on an average ! performance against the College All-Stars recently. The Browns took a 17-3 lead into i the dressing room at halftime but eventually had to sweat out a 24-16 triumph. Cleveland, however, showing no signs of playing dead against a reported talent—laden Eastern Division this campaign, romped to a 37-21 exhibition victory over the San Francisco 49ers Sunday. Not only was the triumph decisive, but the Cleve- | land offense performed in just
about the same style they displayed against Baltimore in the 27-0 championship game last season. Against the 49ths, Ryan threw two strikes to Gary Collins and Lou Groza accounted for three field goals and four extra points. Ryan and relief quarterback Jim Ninowski punctured the San Francisco defense for 305 yards and rolled up another 95 on the ground. Collins caught a pair of 34-yard aerials for scores and Gronza kicked three pointers of 25, 51 and 27 yards.
Pirates beat the Dodgers, 4-2, The Braves climbed to within 114 games of first place with a 4-3 win over the Chicago Cubs and the San Francisco Giants moved to within 2Vi games of the leaders wdien they clobered the Phillies 15-9. The St. Louis Cardinals walloped the Cincinnati Reds 12-7 and the New York Mets defeated the Houston Astros 3-0 in other National League games. In the American League. Cleveland beat Minnesota 6-4 after a 4-3 loss, Detroit drubbed Los Angeles 9-2 and 9-5, Washington dowmed Baltimore 4-2, Chicago beat Boston 9-4 and New York defeated Kansas City 7-3 after bowling in the opener 4-1. The Senators downed the Orioles 4-2, the Tigers walloped the Angeles 9-2 and 9-5 and the White Sox topped the Red Sox 7-4. The New r York Yankees? Oh yes, the forgotten team of the 1965 race split with the Kansas City A’s-winning, 7-3 after a 4-1 defeat. In the National League, Pittsburg defeated Los Angeles 4-2, Milwaukee beat Chicago 4-3 San Francisco drubbed Philadelphia 15-9, Sa. Louis downed Cincinnati 12-7 and New York blanked Houston 3-0.
