Hopeful Men’s About The Heart

A MIDDLE-AGED man is again free from pain and once more able to live a normal life at home and at work after a sew and highly specialized heart operation. At first glance you may not be impressed by this statistic. Yet it is very impressive. For it indicates that new avenues are being sought by surg e o n s to rei open blood vessels to the heart, blood vessels that have been Dr.Coleman closed by arteriosclerosis Ghat blocks the nourishment to the heart muscle. Dr. Bonning G. Lary of the University of Miami School of Medicine is one of a vast group erf heart surgeons who are seeking the surgical means of saving these hearts that are too young to die. By an ingenious technique, added blood was brought to the heart by creating a wider opening to the coronary artery that was closed by disease. The single human being who has undergone this surgery is indeed a very impressive statistic. He stands as a beacon of hope for the recovery of more and more cases of coronary artery disease.

* • •

READERS’ RELATED QUESTIONS Where are the coronary ar-

teries?

The heart is a muscle, a large powerful muscle that pumps blood into every distant part of the body. The heart muscle itself must be fed nourishment from blood in order to continue its remarkable pumping action. The blood vessels that bring the vital oxygen to the heart muscle are the coronary arter

ics. They surround the heart in the form of a crown, or corona, which gives them their name.

• • «

What causes the chest pain in coronary heart disease? Have you ever felt a momentary crampy, painful spasm of the leg muscles while walking rapidly? This pain, like the pain in the heart, is caused by an inadequate supply of blood and oxygen to the muscle. If the coronary arteries are narrowing or closing because of arteriosclerosis any additional stress overburdens the heart and produces a spasm. A heavy meal, walking rapidly against the wind, or severe emotional strain can produce the pain or angina of the chest in patients with coronary disease.

mm*

How does nitroglycerine tablets relieve the coronary pain? A tablet of nitroglycerine under the tongue, or inhaling amyl nitrate relieves the spasm of the coronary arteries and temporarily brings more blood to the heart muscle.

» * •

Can the pain of coronary disease be prevented? There are now some excellent nitrates, which are very effective in the prevention of anginal pain (angina pectoris). Anticoagulant, blood - thinmng drugs are used at the discretion of the doctor. Well-regulated diet in small amounts, weight control, marked limitations of tobacco and avoidance of emotional stress can reduce the severity and frequency of anginal pain. While Dr. Coleman cannot undertake to ansicer individual letters, he wiU use readers' questions in his column whenever possible and when they are of general interest. CAPITAL SEES VIET WAR NOW BECOMING INTENSIFIED

CRITICAL PHASE REACHED IN BITTER CIVIL STRIFE

By HENRY CATHCAKT Central Press Washington Writer TWTASHINGTON—There can be little doubt that the fighting W in Viet Nam has now' reached the critical phase. The North Vietnamese, backed wholeheartedly by Red China and to a somewhat lesser degree by Russia, seem to be pushing for a final conclusion to the long and bitter civil war. The Red offensive has been timed to coincide with the rainy season, for that is when conditions favor their • kind of of guerrilla w arfare as opposed to the : fair-weather fighting that fits in best with aerial assaults and air cover for mass ground attacks by American and South Viet Nam

forces.

Washington is so deeply committed in the fight that it has no practical alternative to increasing its support of the South Vietnamese

m when and if it should be required to prevent

collapse. Unfortunately, this same statement can be made of Red China, although it w'ould

not necessarily apply to Russia.

Washington Given these factors, Washington observers are convinced that the fighting will greatly A long, hot intensify in the coming weeks and months. summer ahead To these individuals, the problem is how to contain the struggle on the present field of

battle.

A key U. S. intention is to further step up the air strikes against North Viet Nam and to have the capability for intensified air attack against any mass movement of armed men into South Viet Nam. For U. S. forces there, it will be a long, hot summer. • • • • • WORK STOPPAGE—Washington deals with labor troubles throughout the nation all the time, but it had a fascinating situation in the heart of its own city recently. The girls at the city's only burlesque house walked out on strike. They complained that they were overworked—six hours a day seven days a week, plus a special midnight show on Satur-

days.

Anyway, the ladies of the ensemble organized themselves into a picket line. Dressed in tailored slacks and blouses, they carried the traditional “unfair” signs as they walked slowly—and

gracefully—in front of the theater.

Non-union ladies were sent out on the street d. C. Girl between shows to picket the picketers. They out-
