Mark Shaw Wins Indiana Young Men's Golf Tourney

BLOOMINGTON, IND. UPI— Mark Shaw, who said he almost passed up the Indiana Young Men’s golf tourney when his brother returned home for a visit after a two-year absence, today wore the crown. Shaw took the 72-hole tourney Friday with consistene shooting which gained him five strokes on qualifying leader Dave Scumaker of Fort Wayne and four strokes on Steve Mayhew of Carmel. Schumaker and Mayhew finished in a tie for second with 299's, while Shaw shot a pair of 75s for a 297 total. Defending champion Wally Armstrong finished fifth with a 303 total. Dave Truman of Plymouth was fourth with a 302 on final rounds of 79 and 72, while Mike Lampsa at 304 with Jim Baske of Bloomington. Lampsa delivered the only par-71 round of the tourney Friday morning. Mell McFall of Bloomington. Mike Gery of West Lafayette

; and Scott Greene of Bloomington. tied for eighth at 306. Shaw’s brother, Jack, a graduate of Purdue where his brother is a junior, returned to his home from the west coast this week and Shaw said he considered skipping the tourney for a reunion. The Young Men’s was Shaw’s first tourney of the summer He was prevented from entering earlier matches by a wrist injury he sustained in an auto accident shortly before the start of the Indiana Amateur tourney. He admitted he was one of the “most suprised persons” at the Indiana golf course Friday when he took the crown. Shaw said he was on the Purdue golf team, but didn’t get to shoot “because the other guys were too good.” Purdue golfers dominated the standings throughout the threeday meet, finally finishing in four of the first five spots.

Macon, Ga., Entrant Leads Pro Putters

INDIANAPOLIS UPI — The 525.000 Professional Putters Association national championship tourney entered its second 72hole round today, with Herman Strickland, 46, Macon, Ga., holding a two stroke lead. Strickland took the tourney lead Friday afternoon, firing 34 holes-in-one in the 72-hole round for a 112 total. He held a twostroke lead over Gleen Garvin, 23, Pensacola. Fla., and Ralph Sapp. 26. Augusta, Ga., the winner of the PPA. None of the five former champions competing in the field was within putting dis-

tance of Strickland after the first day's shooting, through two Hoosiers managed to make the top 10. Lanny Hale posted a 117 for fifth place and Warren Gray was seventh with a 119 for the first round. The winner will receive 54.000 in prize money, with the tourney being played over the Indianapolis course featuring 18 par 2, 32-foot-holes. After today's 72 holes the field will be cut to the low 120 1 and ties to enter the final 72 holes of competition Sunday.

Total Record LAFAYETTE, Ind. UPI — George Clauss, Saginaw, Mich., Friday set a point total record in winning the professional men’s division of the National Archery Association tourney at Purdue, while Australian Hans Wright led all the way to take men’s amateur honors. Clauss scored 3,745 points to win the title, while Bill Bednar of Suffield, Ohio, was second, 53 points off the pace. George Flinzer of Dallas, Pa., finished well over 100 points behind Wright’s 3,684 total, with A1 Muller of Minneapolis, third and Ed Sroka of Sellerville,

Pa., fourth.

A new woman’s amateur j champion were crowned Friday when Nancy Pfiefer of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., came up ^ with 3,746 points to defeat defending champion Victoria Cook i of Minneapolis by 141 points. Young Cathi Towner o f j Greene, N. Y., won the intermediate girls title with 3,397 points, Ann Marson of Great j Neck, N. Y. finished second. Boston Celtics Coach Gets 5-Year Contract

BOSTON UPI — Boston Cel-, tics Coach Arnold (Red) Auerbach was on a “long honeymoon” today with a new five year contract tucked in his pocket. Aubach formally signed a five-year pact Friday as executive vice president and general manager of the Celtics and announced that he would coach the world champion club for at least another year. Marvin Kratter, chairman of the board of Ruppert-Knicker-bocker Brewing Co. which recently purchased the Celtics, said Auerbach would “run the show on a practically autonomous basis.” “We are formalizing our agreement with Red. I pledge to you a long and happy honeymoon with Boston and the Celtics. The team will remain right here,” Kratter said in renewing the new owners’ pledge to keep the Celtics in Boston.
