Sees No Merger Of Armed Units WASHINGTON UPI — Unless President . Johnson pulls out all the stops, there will be no merger of the National Guard and the organized Army reserve this year. That much was apparent today as a House armed services subcommittee prepared to wind up hearings on the controversial Defense Department proposal. Subcommittee Chairman F. Edward Hebert, D-La.. made it almost official Tuesday when he said a merger at ‘‘this time.” in light of developments in Viet Nam, would be detrimental to the national securitv. Hebert, in an interview today, stressed that he was not necessarily opposing the principle of the merger, just its timing, adding that the conditions making it unfeasible could change next week. Feature Movie SANTO DOMINGO UPI — A feature of today’s celebration of Santo Domingo’s 469th anniversary in the square mile of the city held by anti-American rebels will be a free showing of the movie ‘‘Damn Yankees.” Big Plane Is Landed Safely SEWART AFB, Tenn. UPI— A C130 Air Force troop transport plane made an emergency landing here Tuesday night with one of its four engines out of order. Sewart AFB spokesmen said no one was injured. They declined to reveal how many passengers were on the plane. The aircraft, enroute from McGuire AFB in New Jersey to Travis AFB in California, dumped 400 gallons of fuel on the Chattanooga area as an emergency procedure to lighten the weight of the plane.

Local Residents Are Moving To California
Greencastle will lose two of its long-time residents on August 7 when Mr. and Mrs. William Bishop leave to make their future home in southern California. The Bishops came to tins city 36 years ago. Mr. Bishop was associated with the loeal school system for thirty years, serving first as principal of the high school and later as a member of the junior high school faculty. Since his retirement a few years ago Mr. and Mrs. Bishop have spent several winters in California. Their son. Dr. John Bishop, a research chemist, is located in the Los Angeles area. The Bishops have participated in many Greencastle community activities and held memberships in various local organizations. Mr. Bishop has been affiliated with educational groups at the state level, among which are the Indiana State Teachers Association, The Indiana Schoolmen's Club, and Phi Delta Kappa. Mrs. Bishop is a member of the Brown County Gallery Association. The Bishops have chosen to locate in a retirement community. They expect to occupy their newly-built apartment there by the end of August. Their address will be 435F Avenida Sevilla. Rossmoore Leisure World, Laguna Hills. California. Indiana Traffic Toll Now 817 By United Press International Indiana’s 196.'* traffic toll was at least 817 today, compared with 708 on this date a year ago. Authorities said Merle Tolbert. 47, near West Baden, apparently burned to death Tuesday evening when he lost control of his big tank truck on an Orange County road south of French Lick. Child's Version Of An Operation DORCHESTER. England UPI—Staff members of Dorset County Hospitals are chuckling over a child's eye view of a tonsil operation that lends unusual stature to the attending surgeon. A staff letter quotes the child's own account as follows: ‘‘When I went into the bia room there were two lady angels all dressed in white. “Then two men angels came in. “One of the men angels looked down my throat and said: ‘God! look at that child s tonsils.’ “And God looked and said, ‘I’ll take them out at once’.” Youngsters Are Bitten By Snakes JASPER UPI — Melvin Jones. 6. and Keith Bauer, 2. were reported in fair condition at DuBois County Memorial Hospital at Jasper today, suffering from snake bites they received Tuesday. Authorities said the boys, cousins who were playing in their grandmother's garden, apparently were bitten by a copperhead and rushed to the hospital. State police flew antivenom serum to the hospital from Evansville when it w a s discovered only two vials of the serum were on hand. Melvin was bitten on a finger and Keith on the palm of one hand. Melvin is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Jones, and Keith the son of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Bauer, both of near DuBois. It was the second reported incident of hospitalization from snakebit in Indiana in the last six days, with Stanley Driver, 25, R. R. 2. Monticello, admitted to White County Hospital at Monticello last Tuesday. Cholera Epidemic TEHERAN. Iran UPI — One third of Iran is in the grip of a cholera-type epidemic. Premier Hoveida Sadi said today. Sadi told a news conference here the disease was being controlled and all effective measures were being taken to prevent it spreading to other parts of the country. It was announced Monday 89 persons have died since July 22.

61,000 To Be Called In Draft WASHINGTON UPI — The Defense Department, boosting draft calls because of the Viet Nam building, Tuesday asked Selective Service to provide 27.400 men in September and 33.600 in October. The October call includes 4 - 600 men for the Navy which vv ill be drafting for the first time since March. 1956 when it called up 10.000 men. All other men being drafted during the two months will be for the Army, which Is being expanded and is supplying the majority of men for Viet Nam. Hoover Cottage WASHINGTON UPI —- President Johnson is expected to sign in the near future a bill that will make the two-room cottage in which the late President Herbert C. Hoover was bom Aug. 10. 1874, a national memorial.
The trip home from the Girl Scout International Roundup in Idaho is described by Miss Elaine Shumaker as follows: On Saturday. July 31, at 8:30 p. m. 22 girls from Covered Bridge Girl Scout Council returned by train to Terre Haute from the 1965 Senior Girl Scout Roundup. The Scouts, including five girls from Greencastle and one from Bainbridge, had been for nearly three weeks. The site of the Roundup was Farragut State Park in northwestern Idaho, near beautiful Lake Pend Oreille. For the ten days of Roundup the girls practiced the art of gracious living in the out-of-doors and pursued tiieir interests in the varied areas of Scouting. Miss Anne Silander and Miss Chris Johnson, both of Greencastle, worked as commentators. sending many taped interviews to radio stations located throughout the Council.
Miss Sue Smaltz had her hands full as a patrol leader. Miss Jane Goodson was active as both camper and in forums, and Miss Elaine Shumaker worked as a newspaper correspondent and as troop and patrol recorder. Miss Carolyn Roth of the International Patrol found living and working with two Guides from Sweden, a stimulating experience. After a day of being “back home again in Indiana.” Miss Chris Johnson left with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Johnson of 613 Anderson Street, on another camping expedition —a four week trip to Newfoundland. Miss Anne Silander will leave Indiana on August 6 with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Silander. of 613 Anderson Street. to spend eighteen months in Turkey. Mr. Silander will be on leave from DePauw Universtiy where he is an Associate Professor of Economics.

At the special meeting of the Greencastle School Board Monday evening, representatives of the Community Activities Council requested School Board consideration of an expanded recreation program for the community. This program is to include a broad spectrum of activities for all age groups. The Board is making arrangements for a professional survey of recreation needs in
