ture. He told officers he saw the two men get out of the car and enter the market with a large shopping bag and, remembering television programs which he had seen recently In which bandits used shopping bags in similar holdups, he scratched the car’s license number on the sidewalk. He said after the robbery a butcher came out of the store looking for the bandits and he showed the man, Charles Barton, the number he had inscribed on the sidewalk. Barton jotted it down on his apron, went back into the store and notified police. In court today the three waived a preliminary hearing and were ordered held over for an appearance in Vanderburgh Circuit Court Aug. 9. Police said the money and a sawed-off shotgun believed used in the robbery were recovered from the car.

Bible Thought Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord; though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished. By mercy and truth iniquity is purged; and by the fear of the Lord men depart from evil. Proverbs 16:5-6. Pride in the heart leaves no room for the Lord. An arrogant spirit cannot go unpunished. But mercy and truth and the fear of the Lord will drive pride

The Appalachian Regional Development Act, passed in March of this year, is a major effort by the eleven states involved and the national government to “provide public works and economic development programs and the planning and coordination needed to assist in the development of the Appala-
chian region.”
The bill is divided into four titles (sections). Title I sets up the Appalachian Regional Commission, which will guide, advise, formulate, and investigate every project involved. It is made up of one Feweral co-chairman appointed by the President, one member from each state, a second co-chair-man elected by the state members with decisions passed by a yes vote of the Federal cochairman and a majority of
state members.
Title II contains the "meat" of the bill because it spells out new programs and supplements or modifies existing programs. Under new programs (Part A) are the following major provisions: Appalachian Development Highway System, where

Under existing programs (Part B) are Vocational Educational Facilities, Sewage Treatment Works, and supplements to Federal Grant-in-Aid Programs. Part C concerns the criteria for programs, the maintenance of efforts, and the implementation of recommended programs. Title III covers the administration of projects, and Title IV the list of states involved and miscellaneous provisions. The bill requests over one billion dollars in appropriations. This bill represents an “experiment.” a beginning effort with local, state, and national governments working together to relieve the gross economic problems of one region of our country. If this is successful, future programs for other areas will benefit from the experience and the knowledge gained from Appalachia.

In their first six hours in orbit, Cooper and Conrad will try to maneuver to within perhaps 20 feet of another satellite, said Howard Tindall, assistant chief of mission planning and analysis at the Manned Spacecraft
Center.
Cooper and Conrad will first eject the 76 - pound moonlet named REP — short for rendezvous elevation pod — into an orbit of its own. Later, using the Gemini capsule radar for the first time, they will try to “rendezvous” with it high above the earth. Accomplishing it Aug. 19 will depend on whether technicians can solve the fuel cell troubles. One solution officials said, would be to “overload” the cells with additional oxygen and hydrogen. Another would be to provide better insulation. The rendezvous experiment is designed to try out the Gemini radar system in preparation for the Gemini - 6 project in which astronauts Walter M. Schirra and Thomas P. Stafford will actually try to link up with another satellite, a previously orbited Agena rocket.

by Harold Mason PIERCED EARRINGS Some three thousand years ago. Women of Etruria, ancient country of central Italy, were noted for their distinctively designed earrings. Many of our museums have examples of these early Etruscan adornments in their collections. At. first, colorful ceramic balls were used; later, delicate and imaginative twisted gold "hoops’’ and pendants evolved. One design that was seemingly quite popular was a hoop in the shape of a ram or lion's head holding its tail in its mouth—the slender stem of the tail piercing the lobe to hold th« earring in place. Today, teenagers seem interested in reviving the style of pierced ears, and this is both a most feminine and practical idea. Many women hesitate to wear fine gem-set earrings for fear of losing them. This is not true with pierced earrings which are firmly and comfortably fastened. I've often thought how incongruous it is to see a woman with expensive bracelets and rings, yet wearing earrings made of imitation stones and cheap metals.. Certainly, pierced ears are the answer to this. In other centuries, jewelers performed the task of piercing their patron's cars. Today, this is often forbidden by local law, and 13 better done by your family doctor. It is relatively ; painless—a simple procedure that involves wearing a plain * 14 karat gold ring for about a month until the holes are correctly healed. After ’ that, many attractive styles of earrings are available, including those with posts or tension adjustments that , women tell me are a joy < to wear after the sometimes * too tight clip or screw backs.
