Sheinwold On Bridge Use Familiar Count To Value Your Hand By ALFRED SHEINWOLD Most experienced bridge players estimate the value of a hand by counting 4 points for each ace, 3 for each king, 2 for each queen, and 1 for each jack. This point count is especially useful for nontrump bids.

South dealer North-South vulnerable NORTH A A 10 V 1042 O A 8 6 5 3 A 65 2 WEST EAST A 98642 A 753 V Q 7 3 V K 9 8 S 0 Q 109 O K7 A i 8 A Q 1097 SOUTH A KQJ V AJ5 O J42 A AK43 South West North East 1 A Pass 1 0 Pass 2 NT Pass 3 NT All Pass Opening lead — A 4

South’s jump to two notrump shows 19 or 20 points. If he held 16 to 18 points he would open with one notrump; if he had 22 to 24 points, he would open with two notrump. With the in between values he opens with one of a suit and makes a jump bid in notrump at his second turn. North adds his own i points to the points shown by his part ner (19 or 20) and sees that the total is more than the 26 points usually needed for game. North tricks and must postpone takraising to game in notrump. EASY PLAY The play is as easy as the bidding to an experienced player. South needs three diamond tricks and must postpone ta ing dummy’s ace of diamonds as long as possible. South would go down if he took th- ace of diamonds early and gave up a diamond. The opponents would lead a spade to remove dummy’s Ace and South might set up the diamonds but would never get back to dummy to cash them. Declarer deliberately starts the diamonds by playing a low card from each hand. Back comes a spade to dummy’s ace, and declarer returns a low diamond from dummy. South wins the third spade trick and leads his last diamond to dummy’s ace. By this time the last two diamonds are good, and dummy is In the lead to cash them. With three diamonds South has no trouble in taking nine tricks for the game contract. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with 2 NT (22 to 24 points), and the next player passes. You have: spades 9 8 6 4 2 hearts Q 7 3 diamonds Q 10 9 clubs J 8. What do you say? ANSWER: Bid three spades. Since you have 5 points you know that the combined count is 27 to 29 points, which should be enough for game. There is no harm in showing the 5-card major suit as an alternative to notrump.

Senate Probers Hear Tax Agent WASHINGTON UPI — Fed eral tax agent George Wilson told Senate investigators Wed nesday the Internal Revenue Service has to “fight fire with fire” in dealing with hoodlums and racketeers. Wilson, dubbed by a witness Tuesday as the “Dr. Strangelove” of the IRS offiie in Boston, appeared before a Senate subcommittee investigating wire tapping and other government snooping activity. He said he ordered special agent James J. O'Neill, the Boston office’s bugging expert, to place wire taps only on three occasions. He said one tap was placed in a Lynn. Mass., warehouse suspected of being a bookie headquarters. And the other two, he said, were in connection with gambling at an unidentified military installation and thievery from an unidentified Navy Installation. Subcommittee Chairman Edward V. Long, D-Mo., said in a closing statement that Washington officials should be blamed for wiretapping by tax agents in the Boston area. Long ended three days of hearings into wiretapping activities of the Boston IRS office with the comment that the agents there should “not be nunished or reprimanded.” He said he feels the Washington office supplied the equipment and allowed the practices.

Seek To Remove Ruby Case Judge DALLAS UPI — Jack Ruby's lawyers hoped to go before Judge Louis T. Holland today to try to get a hearing on their request that Judge Joe B. Brown be disqualified from the

case.

Brown presided at Ruby’s trial for the slaying of Lee Harvey Oswald, assassin

President Kennedy.

Holland said there was “an outside chance'* the scheduled court session might be delayed

which he is presiding. In the event, the proceeding* probably would begin Friday morning. Dist Atty. Henry Wade, who headed the prosecution of Ruby in the trial in March, 1964, said he would not contest the defense’s request for the hearing. The request is part of an ovei*all appeal of Ruby's death sen-

tence.

Brown has voluntarily withdrawn from the Ruby case. But the defense still wants the dis-

missal hearing.

Phil Burleson, one of Ruby> of | lawyers, said many questions he I wanted answered when he filed the motion for such a hearing went unanswered by Brown's

withdrawal.

Merger Expected To Be Approved INDIANAPOLIS UPI —Barring new developments, Indiana Atty. Gen. John J. Dillon will give his blessing Frday to a proposed merger of the Midwest United Life Insurance Co., Fort Wayne, and Great Northern Life Insurance Co.,

Indianapolis.

Dillon announced his plans early Wednesday night followin a daylong hearing to determine whether there was any improper connection between the proposed merger and the

controversial securities dealings | through Dobich.

i of the late Michael Dobich, In-

dianapolis.

He said the hearing produced no evidence of collusion between Dobich and officials of the two insurance companies in stock dealings which could cost sime 550 investors as much as

32.5 million.

The investigation began when the Dobich Securities Corp., Indianapolis, filed bankruptcy priceedings after Dobich was killed July 10 in a helicopter crash here. The firm's license was revoked by the Indiana Securities Division after investors reported they had not received Midwest United Life stock they had purchased
