By HENRY CATHCAKT

TTTAjsHINGTON — ,f If any memorial is erected to me. ... I yV should like It to be placed in the center of that green plot In front of the Archives Building. ... I don’t care what it is

made of. . . . but I want it plain ’

That was the gist of the desire by President Franklin D. Roose-

velt as it w’as recalled by the late Supreme

Court Justice Felix Frankfurter.

A simple marble block with a few simple words was placed on the spot on April 12—

I c • the 20th anniversary of Roosevelt’s death. I # In the months since that solemn occasion

literally hundreds, and possibly thousands of

‘ the president’s former friends and associates . have passed the spot and have become in-

rreasingly distressed. It is not a ’‘green’' spot, but rather an unkempt area, barren in places,

ggHaa with the tufts of grass uncut and weeds

proliferating.

Under the prodding of some big names, including Supreme Court Justice Arthur J. Goldberg, the people in charge are slowly getting ready to do something about it. Alfred J. Barrett, director of horticultural

maintenance for the National Park Service, agrees the plot is in bad shape, but he’s going to do something about it this autumn, when, he claims, sodding gets the best results under local cli-

matic conditions.

• APT STORY—Rep. Sidney R. Yates. D-Ul., was discussing a long-time controversy over Lake Michigan water between his and some neighboring states. The argument and the legal maneuvering keep mounting but no one ever seems to be getting anywhere. Yates says the situation reminds him of a comment made more than a half century ago in the midst of a dispute between the United States and China. Theodore Roosevelt’s secretary of state, John Hay, was discussing the difference with Chinese Ambassador Wu. Upon emerging from the meeting. Hay reported: "We talked until Ambassador Wu was “Hayzy* and I was •Wuzy,’ but I don’t think anything was accomplished.’*

• NEW "HATE” GROUP -Rep Otis G. Pike, D-N Y.. thinks he has a good idea on how to get rich without doing much work. He says that so much •’hate'’ mail is bombarding legislators that one obvious way to wealth is to form your own group. Pike has it all figured out. With the extremists of the farright and far-left in full possession of their respective areas of operation. Pike plans to establish an organization of middleof-the-roaders. He’s picked a name for his organi-

zation: "The Militant Moderate Militia.”

Pike has also decided on the first program for his mythical organization—it will conduct a campaign against the extremist organizations. And, in the firm belief that every successful

organization of this type must have a catchy slogan, he’s figured

out one for his own brain child.
