Confidence, Respect, Understanding! Is Key To Success Says Humphrey

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS W. Va. UPI — Vic* President Hubert H. Humphrey said Monday that “confidence, mutual re- | spect and understanding were the keys to continued economic i expansion. Humphrey said that there was a “sound balance’’ m the nation’s economy but that the Johnson administration was “not I complacent.’’ “Signs of balance — or imbalance — are watched for,” he said in a speech prepared for delivery before a meeting of corporate secretaries at the Green-

briar Hotal here. “This government has. In effect, an economic early warning system. Data and information concerning the economy is collected and refined by various government agencies — and brought directly to the attention of the president — *> that economic policy instruments can be used, if necessary, to head off trouble ahead. “No indications now point to an unstable boom or classical inflation.” Price stabihty ha* been maintained and thereby has held in check another cause of inflation, Humphrey added. “If this stability of prices is to continue, business and labor leaders alike must, as they have, keep the public interest in mind,” he said. "I am confident they will.”

Couple Harassed By Racialist EAST MEADOW, N.Y. UPI— A cross was burned early Monday on the lawn of a raciallymired couple who reported they had been harassed in other ways since they bought their $20,000 home two years ago. East Meadow is a populous Long Island suburb of New York City. Vincent right, SI, a Negro school teacher, said he discovered the six-foot wood cross aflame on his lawn after being awakened by a noise and a shout shortly after midnight. He said his 24-year-old white wife and their two children were asleep at the time. Wright said that since the family moved into the previously all-white neighborhood they had received crank telephone calls and that three months ago his car windshield was broken and license plate stolen. Police earlier had said Wnght : could give them no reason for the cross-burning and attributed it to a teen-ager prank. “We’ve never had anything like that here before,” a detective said.

New Yorkers Walk NEW YORK UPI — Thous- ; ands of World’s Fair and other visitors, deprived of the city’s 12.000 taxicabs by a strike, braved the subway rush or became pedestrians Monday to get i to their destinations. The strike ! was marked by sporadic vioI lence and vandalism. I Visitors became honorary strap-hangers on the subways along with the city's natives as most of the cabs were absent from the streets for the second time in three months because of a drivers’ strike aimed at union recognition by the taxi fleet owners. No negotiations were slated.
