Continues Debate WASHINGTON UPI — The House continued debate today on President Johnson’s housing bill, with administration forces trying to bridge a split over the measure’s controversial rent subsidy plan. The subsidy plan, aimed at enabling poor families to move into better housing through federal rent assistance, was the one provision blocking general bipartisan support for the bill. Although it was trimmed down in committee, the subsidy has drawn attacks from several directions. A GOP attempt to kill the provision was voted down Monday by a two-to-one margin. The subsidy provision in the present bill would be limited to persons displaced by slum clearance or highway projects, the elderly, and physically handicapped, and to projects built by non-profit organizations. Other provisions of the bill would extend for four years current programs for slum clearance, public housing and government mortgage insurance for new homeowners.
