Purdue Reports On State Crops LAFAYETTE. Ind. UPI—Indiana fanners had seven days of ‘‘favorable’’ field work last week, but moisture deficiencies have become increasingly widespread. the latest weather and crop report said today. Agricultural statistician Robert E. Straszheim at Purdue University said both topsoil and subsoil moisture supplies have shown a decline from the previous week. "Topsoil moisture is now rated as mostly short to adequate,” he said, "with subsoil

moisture rated as short to mostly adequate.” The report said pastures again showed a decline, from good a week ago to mostly fair to good. "This is the third week of decline and puts pasture conditions at about the same level as last year at thiss time,” Straszhein pointed out. The corn crop grew rapidly during the past week, rising 6 inches to an average height of 16 inches. 4 inches taller than last year and the 1959-63 average. Soybeans also made rapid growth, doubling their height to 6 inches by last weekend—1 inch taller than last year at

this time. About 20 per cent of the corn has been laid by, compared to an average of 15 per cent. Combining is now getting underway in earnest, the report said. By the. weekend, 6 per cent of the wheat acreage had been harvested; about 15 per cent of barley had been combined, the same as last year. The first cutting of alfalfa hay is 85 per cent complete, compared with 80 per cent last year. About 55 per cent of the first cutting of clover hay has

been made, the same as last year. State climatologist Lawrence E. Schaal reported that rainfall deficiencies for the past seven weeks ranged from 2 to 3.8 inches. Four-week rainfall amounted to just 2 inches in the northwest. Southern Indiana had 2.5 inches while west-cen-tral areas reported 4 inches.
