Prevention Is Best Weapon In Campaign Against Termites

By DOROTHEA M. BROOKS United Press International NEW YORK (UPI) — What is the truth about termites? Is the horror of them a hoax? Or is a house infested with them hopeless? “As usual, the truth lies midway between these extremes,” aceordingto Robert D. Sharp, entomologist and vice president of Prentiss Drug A Chemical Company of New York. Sharp aays: "Termite damage is frequent.

extensive and expensive. Once termites reach the wood structure of a building they work quickly and soundlessly, often hollowing out a board, leaving nothing but a shell of paint. “Detection is difficult because they are careful not to eat through the surface of the wood, even going so far as to daub up any hole where they have accidentally broken throuhgh. Their presence often goes unnoticed by a homeowner until discovered by accident—a board giving w r ay in the floor or

wall, or even the house settling out of line. When thii happens, damage has reached major proportions.” On the other hand. Sharp says, science has developed swift, sure weapons in the war I against termites such as the chemicals chlordane and heptachlor w'hich not only combat infestation but prevent it. With termites, he expert emphasized, an ounce of prevention surely is worh the proverbial pound of cure. And. he says, it helps to know’ a bit about the enemy. In the reproductive stage, Sharp explained, termites look like winged ants—tiny black or dark brown flying, swarming j

insects. However, there are distinctive differences in appearance. The winged ants have thin, wasp-like waists, transparent wings and curved antennae. Termites’ wings are opaque, their antennae elbowshaped and, most distinctively, they have thick waists. After swarming, Sharp said, termites shed their wings and go underground to start new colonies. They feed on wood. When they cannot find sufficient wood in or on the ground they will emerge from the soil to attack the w’ood in a building through openings in the foundation around pipes or through cracks in the foundation, taking care to avoid contact with the

ground. If none of these routes is available, they wrill construct tubes of mud in order to reach the w’ood W’ithout exposing themselves. Finding Them To determine the presence of termites once they are underground, Sharp suggests, watch for piles of discarded wings and for mud shelter tubes around the foundation of the house. To discourage them he recommends: —Keep a clean yard, removing scrap lumber and tree stumps as soon as possible. —Check house construction to be sure no wood portions are in contact with the ground. Wood posts should have concrete bases. If posts are equip-

ped with metal temfltl shields, be sure they haven’t been bent or otherwise damaged. Watch for foundation cracks and seal them immediately. Termites can get through a crack only 1/64 inch wide. In recent years, Sharp said, many builders have been treating soil, footings and masonry voids with chlordane before starting construction. The U.S. Department of Agriculture and agencies interested in construction recommend this soil pretreatment along with other methods of termite control and, Sharp said, some scientists estimate that protection with chlordane or the newre heptachlor, may last the entire mortgage

life of the house.

Owners of older homes, Sharp urged, should have them examined periodically by an expert. If termite infestation is discovered, he said, the professional pest control operator will apply a chemical barrier to the soil under and around the house, and perhaps into the structure

itself.

If chlordane or heptachlor is used, he said, the barrier will remain effective long after termites have been killed. In fact, most operators give a written guarantee against furthre infestation for a period of years.

Termites, terrible though they are if unchecked, can be wiped: out completely and sw'iftly if discovered early.
