Disclosure of the wider role for U.S. combat troops came as Gen. Maxwell D. Taylor, U.S. ambassador to Saigon, met State Department and Pentagon officials to review the" situation and plan further strategy.

U.S. Commander Gets Authority WASHINGTON UPI — The State Department said Tuesday that Gen. William C. Westmoreland, U.S. commander in Viet Nam, had been given authority to commit American troops to “combat support” operations if asked by the South Vietnamese command. This goes beyond the previous role of U.S. Marines and airborne troops, whose operations had been limited to “aggressive patrolling” to protect and defend defense perimeters around key U.S. airbases and Tital port facilities.

Johnson Is Under Pressure By Lyle Wilson President Johnson must have been under pressure this week to take his hands off the foreign relations controls to do an arm twisting job in^New York City. The arm belongs to Democratic Mayor Robert F. Wagner. Wagner shook up New York politics last week with a hint that he might not seek re-election. The grand political strategy to LBJ's Great Society requires that Wagner run this year as usual and that he be elected. Wagner is the Great Society's first and last defense against a Democratic take-over in New York state by Sen. Robert F. Kennedy. If Robert Kennedy's luck holds, he will gain leadership iof the Democratic party in New York state this year and in 1972 or his brother, Sen-! ator Edward Moore Kennedy D-Mass. will contest Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey for the Democratic presidential nomination. Wagner must be re-elected, of course, to continue aa tha top New York state Democrat. The Republican nominee for mayor will be Rep. John Lindsay, a left of center whizbang who refused last year to support Barry Goldwater for president and who shrinks now from soiling his campaign with a Republican label. Linosay probably can lick any Demo- ; crat for mayor except Wagner. He might even lick Wagner. Lindsay is a sort of Republican New Dealer. He won reelection to the U. S. House of Representatives from a wealthy New York City constituency by a long.sided margin. Most other city and state Republican candidates were clobbered. Democrats enjoy a 3-to-registration bulge over Republicans in New York City. If anyone can overcome that handicap, Lindsay can do it. He probably will have a big nam* Democrat, maybe two, on the citywide ticket with him. So Lindsay will be a fusion ,— -q. date more than a Republican.

Discovery at the Fair

THE PAVILION itself is a thing of beauty. A sevenpointed star with a pyramid roof of glass, it’s set in a pool with 14 fountains. The starting point of discovery—the stirring of thought in the minds of men—is translated into visual form through a unique kinetic sculpture, a rotating mass of slender steel rods. Other original abstract art forms include an inspiring 28-foot stained-glass sculpture. A FURTHER step into the realm of discovery is taken by the film. “Seven Ways to Look at God,” and a TV screen features personal, first-hand accounts of spiritual healing. A set of phones provides recorded answers to the questions most often asked about Christian Science. The fact that the physical senses are deceptive is dramatized by a highly realistic "illusion”—visitors reach out to touch a small stone, only to find themselves clutching air. Wherever you turn in the Christian Science Pavilion, you'll be fascinated by the T dimensions of
