Letter To Editor...To The Editor: I was driving west on U. S. 40, between Plainfield and Belleville, when a speeding car passed me. At the same time I noticed a truck pulling out of a truck stop. The car was traveling at such a great speed it couldn't stop. It turned to miss the truck and lost control. When the car came to a stop it was in a big ditch and laying on

its top.

The car had just passed me, so naturally I w’as the first one | there. My buddy got tha flares out and we removed the people and laid them flat on the ground. By this time the State Police had arrived. One got out and come down to where we were. The other one stayed by the patrol car. The one by the patrol car asked if an ambu- ' lance was needed. The other • one just stood there and I finally told him that the lady was

They’re telling a good one on the sheriff of an adjoining county. “Somebody” called him up and told, confidentally—I don t want my name mentioned, of course—"that a truck was on its way from Montezuma with a load of “white mule.” Three roads were indicated as possibilities. The sheriff mobilized a half dozen deputies who endured the winter breezes until a late hour, when finally the truck heaved in sight. And sure enough, ft was loaded with white mule—a dead one—on its way to a fertilizer plant. The sheriff didn't tax any “in and out fees ’ on the case.

four spades.

At five clubs, East would lose a spade, a heart, and three diamonds. The penalty would be only 500 points, less 100 for honors. This is a small price to pay to stop a 700-point rubber. A bid of five clubs has something else to recommend it. South or North may push on to five spades, and then they may well be overboard.

tinned with the ace. South ruffed and led a trump to force out the ace. Declarer eventually took two heart finesses, losing one trump, one heart, and one

club.

The bidding and the nature of the opening lead made it clear that West had four clubs, which left South with a singleton. Leading a second club turned control over to South. East must switch to the king of hearts at the second trick. This defeats the contract if West has the ace of hearts, since the defenders take two top hearts and then East ruffs a heart. As the cards lie, the switch is equally effective. South takes the ace of hearts and leads a trump, but West steps up with the ace of trumps to cash the queen of hearts and give East a heart ruff. If West has neither the ace nor the queen of hearts, East's switch will not work, but neither will anything else. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with one club,

Johnson, Erhard Agree On Force WASHINGTON UPI — President Johnson and West German Chancellor Ludwig Erhard agree that nuclear-backed U. S. forces should remain in Europe “so long as they were wanted and needed for the peace and security.” The two leaders issued a joint statement Friday following a discussion of mutual problems in an hour-long meeting and a working lunch at the White House. They pledged to maintain an “intimate and dynamic” alliance between their nations. Erhard met with Johnson during a one-day visit to Washington after receiving an honorary degree from Columbia; University in New York Thurs- I day. The West German chancellor ! left Friday night for Bonn, j where he meets at the end of next week with French President Charles de Gaulle, whose objection to the preponderant role of the United States in i NATO has caused strain within the defense alliance. Friday’s informal sessions between Johnson and Erhard were attended by Defense Secretary ! Robert S. McNamara and Sec- ] retary of State Dean Rusk. Erhard emphasized in the' statement West Germany's “vital interest in the continued ; progress of European unity.” ! The chancellor, who met with a few members of Congress before his departure, said that even though his visit was an informal one it was natural that his talks with U. S. leaders would ba “filled with substance.”
