Soviet Bombers Over Viet Nam WASHINGTON UPI — The United States was faced today | with the potential menace of | deeper Russian involvement in the Viet Nam war. Official sources here disclosed | late Thursday that a number of Soviet Hyushin-28 medium jet bombers of Korean War vintage had been spotted in the area of Hanoi, the capital of Communist North Viet Nam. Some put the number at between six and eight. The Defense Department, confirming the find, said only that "a number were spot-
ted.
There was no firm assessment from UJS. officials as to the significance of the new development. But the fact that Russia apparently had supplied at least a few offensive weapons to a country which hitherto had received only defensive materials was causing some concern. It was expected that Washington might take the occasion to deliver a stern warning to Moscow of the perils attendant on giving the Hanoi regime any weapons which could intensify the bitter Viet Nam conflict. In answer to queries, a Pentagon spokesman said, “The IL28 1 is an obsolescent plane, but they will be observed closely.” Military sources were puzzled about the appearance of the twin-jet, 500 - mile - an - h o u r bomber. While the plane has the range to strike Saigon and other South Vietnamese targets, it was considered unlikely that it could get put U.S. anti-aircraft missiles or much faster U.S. Air Force jet interceptors.

Poets Protest Foreign Policies NEW YORK UPI — Six more poets, all Pulitzer Prize winners, have joined fellow poet Robert Lowell in protest against President Johnson’s foreign policies. Earlier this week Lowell informed the President he was withdrawing from the June 14 White House Festival of Arts because of American foreign policy in the Far East and the Caribbean. The poet, also a Pulitzer Prize winner, said he viewed U.S. policy with “dismay and distrust” and voiced fear that it could lead to nudlear
war.
The six poets joined 14 writers and artists Thursday in a telegram to Johnson indicating their support for Lowell’s ac-
tion.
Pulitzer laureate Stanley Kunitz said the 20 sponsors of the message were "hastily recruit-
ed.”
