I United States for development ' of a military tank rather than

to France.

Foreign News Commentary By PHIL NEWSOM At the Paris meeting of NATO defense ministers, the United States found itself criticized for actions which on their face seem to contradict the goal of world peace. Unfortunately, they reflect the world as it ex-

ists.

The criticism stemmed from the fact that the United States now also is the world’s major | seller of arms.

It arose not from any repugnance against the traditional ‘merchant of death” but rather because the efficiency of US. manufacture and the quality of the goods were shutting out others in a highly competitive

market.

In Paris, therefore, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara felt it was necessary to assure NATO members the United States would buy arms from them if prices were competitive and also to assure them

, that the United States does not

For example, British rnanu-^ ^ salesmanship to facturers have complained that: ^ t() buy American

competition from the united •

weapons.

States gradually Is killing off fhcton coMnI st]e the British aircraft industry. o( u s weapons abroad France Unhappy Too j Among its Allies, the United French President Charles de, States seeks standardization so Gaulle was annoyed because | that weapons and ammunition West Germany turned to the! may be interchangeable.

L And whatever the mercenary benefits of these arms sales may be, the United States tries strenuously to prevent the sale of weapons or strategic materials to Communist nations or

their allies.

Cite Political Shift There are, of course, shadow areas in which a country may receive both U.S. and Soviet made weapons. India is a case in point. There are other cases where arms sales have been made but since have been halted because of a shift in the political I scene, such as Indonesia. There are opposite examples j such as in the Middle East Iwhere the United States in the

past has been reluctant to contribute to the arms race but in recent months has been discussing the sale or gift of arms to Iraq, Ismel, Jordan, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia. Within the picture are several

ironies.

Such is the state of the world today, that it is easier for the United States to sell weapons than it is surplus wheat. And the sale of weapons is used as an offset against the dangerous outflow of U.S. gold. A case in point is West Germany where the United States maintains its largest force outside continental United States. Military sales to West Germany

offset the costs of these forces, sane.

Gets Life For Killing Child NEWCASTLE UPI — A 22-year-old Greenfield man, Norman Lee Corbin, was sentenced Tuesday to a life term in the Indiana State Prison in connection with the death of his 21-month-old daughter. Henry Circuit Court Judge Wesley Ratliff, who passed the sentence, said Corbin had been examined by two psychiatrists,

I Corbin was convicted last Tuesday on second-degree murder charges after allegedly beating his daughter Anita Lynn, with his fists. He had said before sentencing that he i has asked for psychiatric help , three times and had been refused. Corbin’s 23-year-old wife. Rose goes on trial June 21 in Decatur Circuit Court on i j 1 charges of first-degree murder : arising from the same death. I She is now being held in the Decatur County Jail in Greens- ! burg.
