2 Th* Dally Bannar, Graancastla, Indiana Wednesday, June 2, 1965 Editorial-Wise 'Stop The Auto Fumes" (From: New York Herald Tribune! Dirty, polluted air benefits no one. It’s a problem, of course, that concerns the urban smog-breathers' rather than, say, the Wyoming rancher. But this is a nation that lives more and more in metropolitan concentrations: Renee pollution of our environment is, or ought to be, a matter of widespread concern. A U.S. Senate public works subcommittee has been holding hearings on the need to clean up. Its attention is overdue and welcome. We hope it won t get lost in rival contentions about who or what is most to blame for poisonous air. There is no question about the automobile exhaust pipe's substantial contribution or the killing filth spewed out of industrial and home smokestacks. The point is to establish effective control. Since the automobile is a major offender, it seems only common sense to insist on anti-pollution devices as standard equipment. California has shown the way; the means are practical and relatively inexpensive. The Detroit auto manufacturers clearly see the trend. As an obvious necessity for pulbic health, let's have a Federal law*.
