Brother Act At Speedway INDIANAPOLIS UPI — Another “brother act’’ has become a reality at the Speedw r ay, but A1 may not see much of Bobby Unser when the 500-mile race starts next Monday. Bobby Unser, in one of the brutish big Novis, starts in the middle of the third row. A1 Is in the middle of the 11th and last and will bring up the rear on the flying start. It’s the first brother combination at the Speedway since Jim and Dick Rathmann, both now retired. Jim won the 1960 race and Dick called it quits after placing seventh a year ago. The Unsers of Albuquerque, N.M., are also famous in racing. Bobby has won the Pike’s Peak Hill Climb championship in Colorado seven times, A1 has w r on it once. Brother Louis is mechanic for A1 and Jerry Jr. was killed in a practice crash at the Speedway in 1959. T just knew' the boys wouldn’t quit,” said their mother, Mrs. Jerry Unser, Sr. “I don’t think anyone thought we would quit. Jerry was doing what he wanted to do most of his life. Not many people get to do that. Those that do are very fortunate and you should not take it away.”

By KURT FREUDENTHAL INDIANAPOLIS UPI — It’s by design — not by accident — that Mario Andretti is the hottest rookie in the 500-mile Speedway auto race since Parnell! Jones made his debut four years ago. The native of Trieste who became a U.S. citizen only this spring w'atched the late Jimmy Bryan flash to victory In 1958. He decided right then that was for him, too. He returned to Nazareth, Pa., with well-mapped plans. T said to myself I hope to make the Speedway in at least 10 years,” he recalled as he relaxed in Gasoline Alley just a few days before the holiday race. Last year he joined the United States Auto Club and he was a tough competitor from the very start. This spring, he led the 150-mile big car show at Phoenix, Ariz., when he had to swerve to avoid a collision. He had to settle for sixth place. But he finished second only to winner Jim McElreah in the 100-miler at Trenton, N.J. That was Andretti’s dress rehearsal for the Speedway and he didn’t disappoint his backers. He was a first-day qualifier in a new rear-engine car at an average speed of nearly 159 miles per hour and no “500’’ newcomer has ever traveled that fast. But the pint-size Andretti wasn't saitsfied. He had gone better than 160 mph in practice and had hoped to qualify in the 159 mph bracket. “I was shooting for a record but not necesarily for the pole position,” he explained. “I went as fast as I could go safely. I was disappointed with the speed —we carried too much fuel and that made the car ‘push,’ ” he said. But Andretti, who weighs all of 134 pounds, is right behind pole sitter A. J. Foyt at the start of Monday’s chase — a good spot from which to charge. “This is going to be a sprint race,” he said. "And this car is going to be a tiger comes race day. It’s ready and so am I.” Andretti, who started racing as a 13-year-old in Italy's gov-ernment-sponsored formula junior competition, sportsman A1 Dean and Builder-chief mechanic Clint Brauwner, considered one of the best in the business, stuck their heads together after last year’s race to make preparations for this year. Brawner and his crew of Jim McGee, Arnie Johnson and Tony Buffone started building the car in November. They equipped it with a Ford V8 double overhead cam engine, one of 17 in Monday’s race. “I have a lot of faith in this car,” said Andretti. “It was built for stress and includes engineering.”

L. A. Dodgers Are Loaded With Talent By FRED DOWN UPI Sports Writer The Los Angeles Dodgers are so loaded with pitching that a guy with a 1.000 won-lost percentage and a 1.59 earned run average ranks no better than their No. 4 starter. Of course, “that guy” happens to be Johnny Podres — master of the changeup, World Series hero and the playboy of the Western world long before anybody ever heard of Dean Chance or Bo Belinsky. Podres sat out virtually the entire 1964 season with a sore arm but he’s back in business this year and he’s pitching those clean, easy games against the tough teams that have marked his entire career. Johnny’s 3-0 this year, for example, with the wins over the Philadelphia Phillies, Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Braves. He’s gone to nodecision four times against weaker clubs. Podres turned In one of his typical quick and slick jobs Thursday night when he pitched the Dodgers to a 3-2 victory over the Braves. He had one tough inning — the third In which doubles by Denny Lemaster, Frank Bolling and Hank Aaron produced the Braves’ two runs—pitched out of it and sent the boys out on the town in 2:02. Podres has worked a total of 62 innings this season and allowed 48 hits and 11 earned runs. His ERA is the best In the league — even if he does rank behind teammates Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale and Claude Osteen as a Dodger starter. The Houston Astros downed the St. Louis Cardinals 6-1, the San Francisco Giants drubbed the Cincinnati Reds 9-2, and the New York Mets topped the Chicago Cubs 8-5. Pittsburgh at Philadelphia was rained out. In the American League, Detroit defeated New York 4-1, Boston beat Minnesota 2-0, and Washington downed Los Angeles 9-6. Throws Five-Hitter Dick Farrell pitched a fivehitter to raise his record to 4-1 as the Astros dealt St. Louis’ Ray Washburn his second defeat. Lee Maye drove in two runs with a sacrifice fly and a double and Jim Wynn hit his eighth homer to lead the As-

tros’ attack. Dick Groat had two hits for St. Louis. Gaylord Perry’s three - hit picthing and a three-run homer by Cap Peterson enabled the Giants to snap their three-game losing streak. Jay Alou and Hal Lanier each contributed 3 hits to the 16-hit Giant attack which started against Joe Nuxhall and continued against three successors. Ed Kranepool drove in three runs with a sacrifice fly and a double and Johnny Lewis and Ron Swoboda drove in two each in the Mets’ 10-hit attack. Gary Kroll went 5 1-3 innings to win his tihrd game while Cal Koonce suffered his third setback for the Cubs.

To Join Indians INDIANAPOLIS UPI — Catcher Dave Rickets, who batted .254 last year with Jackson- ; ville of the International League, will join the Indianapolis Indians of the Pacific Coast League this weekend. The Indians announced Thursday that Rickets had been optioned to them by the St. Louis Cardinals. He has batted .194 this season in infrequent appearances with Toledo of the International League.
