'Big Brother' Is A Reality

UNIV&KSITT Park, Pa. (UPI) — Th« old science fiction horror of one’s behaviour being scrutinised constantly by the eye of a 'Big Brother” has become a reality. At least for 15 families at the Pennsylvania State Univer-

sity it has.

They take turns living in a families, model home with flexible interior • walls which has been built into a Home Economics

building here.

From the time they arise in the morning until the children are tucked in at night, research assistants watch and record

their activities.

Object of the data gathering is to learn the house preferences of different types of families.

It also will give graduate students working on the project "deeper insight into human needs,” according to college dean Grace M. Henderson. Each family moving into the home may change the size and shape of rooms by moving the

walls.

So far, no adverse psychological affects stemming from the constant observance of the “Big Brothers and Sisters” have been reported by participating

of 1965, according to a survey by the General Electric Company. Most of the homeowners acquired cooling systems with an eye on their effect on the market value of a house when it is sold, as well as the health and comfort benefits, the survey showed. Homeowners and real estate developers are offering central cooling as a standard system in more of their homes, even in some areas of the northern states where the oppressive heat and humidity seasons are relatively short, says GE. Financial institutions such as banks and savings and loan associations, are beginning to require that builders take air conditioning Into account before reaching firm plans on projects. The health benefits of air conditioning also are becoming more widely known, particularly for suffers from allergies and heart ailments. By controlling humidity, air conditioning also avoids moisture damage to furnishings and reduces housework by constantly filtering dust and other particles out of the interior atmosphere. Finally, the reduction of central air conditioning costs has provided a great deal of the impetus for its growth, says GE. A central system is now within the reach of nearly all homeowners, with many acquiring adequate cooling for the whole house for less than $1,000.

Life Saving Auto Glass HOUSTON (UPI> — The use of tempered glass in automobile windows has reduced the chances of cuts and concussions in vehicle accidents, two university professors told members of the Harris County Medical Society. Dr. William A. Lange, chief of plastic surgery at Wayne University College of Medicine in Detroit, and Dr. Lawrence Patrick, profesor of engineering mechanics at Wayne, described their experiments with auto window’s.

The studies led to a decision qy American automobile manufacturers to use only tempered glass in windows. Their experiments showed that laminated glass, which does not shatter, cuts down on concussions but increases the incidence of lacerations since a hole punched in it has sharp, jagged edges. Tempered glass breaks into thousands of tiny cubes without sharp edges when it is struck, the professors said, reducing the poesbility of cuts for an automobile passenger who has been thrown against the window.

Court Rules On Testimony INDIANAPOLIS UPI — The Indiana Supreme Court held Thursday that the unsupported testimony of an accomplice is sufficient to sustain a conviction. The ruling came in connection with an appeal by Phillip Couch of Indianapolis and Hillsboro, Ala., who was sentenced to 1025 years on a robbery charge in . Marion Criminal Court. Couch appealed to the high ' court, claiming that “the sole evidence connecting him with the crime is the testimony of two alleged accomplices.” Couch’s wife testified that he was at their home in Alabama on the day in 1961 when an Indianapolis tavern was held up. He was charged with that holdup. Coach’s mother and a former Indianapolis neighbor also testified he was not in Indianapolis on that date. However, two acquaintances who said they were accomplices testified he was with them when they staged the holdup using stockings as masks. The court said the testimony of Couch's relatives was subject to “bias and self-interest.” The court concluded “in this state an accomplice is a competent witness and his testimony will sustain a conviction even if there is not corroboration.”
