Steel Industry Outlook Good NEW YORK UPI — The long-term outlook for the nation’s steel industry looks good, according to top steel executives. Steel management admitted some concern for the immediate future because of labor and ; inventory uncertainties. Industry leaders expressed their views Wednesday at the 73rd annual meeting at the American Iron and Steel Institute. Predictions for steel production for 1965 ranged between 121 million tons and 127 million tons, which would equal the 1964 record. But executives said some of the demand for steel is attributable to stockpiling above normal needs by users who feared a possible strike. U. S. Steel Corp. Chairman Roger M. Blough said there was no reason to expect a steel strike this year and that “a lot of hard work on both sides” could provide a reasonable

agreement on a new wage pact “without deadlines or crises.” The industry believes a settlement would result in a temporary decline in new orders while customers work off excess inventories. The steel men said that foreign exporters will benefit if a stalemate in labormanagement bargaining occurs close to the Aug. 31 contract deadline. Steel imports already are expected to easily top last year’s six million tons.

Presses For OAS Decision WASHINGTON UPI — The United States is pushing for more streamlined decision-mak-ing machinery in the Organization of American States (OSA) to permit the hemispheric assembly to act swiftly in a crisis. Secretary of State Dean Rusk was to attend an OAS meeting, together with the foreign ministers of several Latin American nations, either today or Friday. The matter probably will be thrashed out during this session. U. S. officials, mindfuu of the sensitivities of Latin nations, did not want to appear to be pressing on the question, but they hoped that the Dominican crisis would prompt the OAS to establish such procedures.
