Ed Pakow’ might be just what the slumping Syracuse Chiefs need. The 28-year-old righthander rejoined the Chiefs earlier this week after the parent Detroit Tigers demoted him. He was a welcome addition to Manager Frank Carswell’s staff, which had lost seven of their last nine decisions. Pakow’s first appearance since being sent back to Syracust Friday night was a fourhit, 2-1 triumph over Rochester which pulled them to within one game of fifth-place Toledo. In other games, Mike Cuellar, Tom Hilgendorf and Don Dennis of Jacksonville combined their efforts to defeat Toledo, 6-5. The Suns were paced by a 15-hit attack while the only home run of the contest was the Mud Hens’ Mickey Harrington. Second-place Toronto moved to within 2\<2 games of Atlanta by stopping Buffalo 3-1 behind the pitching of Mickey Sinks and Guido Grilli.
