South ruffed the second round of diamonds, alas, with the five of spades, ir omy ne nad read this column he would have ruffed with the nine of spades. The difference was considerable. South continued with the king of spades, discovering the bad break. He cashed the queen of spades and then led the nine. West was alert enough to cover , with the jack, forcing declarer to win the third round of trumps in dummy. Declarer could not afford to draw the last trump since he was in the dummy for the last time and had to try the heart finesse. One heart finesse was not enough, and West ruffed the second heart, defeating the

slam. What Might Have Been South lost his slam when he ruffed with a low trump at the second trick. Try playing the hand after ruffing the second diamond with the nine of spades. You cash the king and queen of spades and then lead the ten. If West plays low, you let the ten ride and win the fourth trump with dummy’s ace. If West covers with the jack, you win the third trump with the ace and fourth with dummy’s eight. In either case you draw four rounds of trumps ending in the dummy. Now you can lead the nine of hearts for a finesse, continue with the queen of hearts and then with a low heart. You take the entire heart suit without fearing a ruff by West. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with one club, and the next player passes. You hold: Spade A 8 4 2. Heart Q 9 7 3, Diamond K J, Club J 10 9. What do you say? Answer: Bid one heart. With two four-card suits, respond in the cheaper. If partner has hearts, he can raise at once. If he has spades, he can bid them at his second turn, and then you will raise. Either way, you will discover a fit in a major suit if there is a fit to discover.

Jim Harris Chev-Buick is among Chevrolet dealerships which have received special recognition for increased efforts to provide high quality vehicles and service to used car and truck customers. Presentation was made to the dealership recently by the Chevrolet Motor Division for a Quality "OK” Standards plaque, which signifies the local agency’s participation in the new Quality “OK” Used Car and Truck Warranty program. Designed to give greater owner satisfaction, the program assures buyers that "OK” used cars and trucks have been inspected, road-tested and reconditioned and are backed by a written dealer warranty providing benefits for a 25-month period. Accepting the plaque from John Fields, zone used car and truck merchandising manager, is Paul Harris of the local dealership. "Under the new program,” Paul Harris said, "a Quality “OK” sticker on a used car or truck is even more significant to the buyer than ever before. It means the vehicle has been carefully selected, honestly represented, fairly priced and is warranted in writ-
ing by us.
