Construction is going full blast now on the by-pass of a 105-year old covered bridge just south of Putnamville on state highway 243. The road was closed some time ago because of the rapid deterioration of the old structure. The by-pass is ao constructed as to allow the water from the small creek to maintain a constant flow. Going through the by-pass are four 40-foot whistles that are four feet in diameter. These pipes that are pointed out in t he picture above by arrows are supposed to allow the water to flow at its normal speed. In case of an overflow, that could happen very easily due to the many risings of creeks in our locale, the by-pass has a low point (shown in the picture above where the bull-dozer is» where the water will flow over. Superintendent of State Highway Garage. Ed Raines, remarked that traffic would be allowed to travel the by-pass at least 90 per cent of the time. In ease of an over-flow a man will be stationed at the by-pass to direct traffic. Photo by Frank Puckett, Jr.

Johnson paid tribute today to averyone from governors to garden clubs for creating billboard - free superhigheraya through lush, green land. The First Lady took advantfge of the warm spring weather to take a two-day, 700-mile ♦our of Virginia’s countryside to point up her husband’s "see America first” program aimed at getting U. S. tourists to vacation at home. Her first stop was at a new' wayside shelter for motorists on Interstate 95 near this Scottish community. At dedication ceremonies for the shelter, she told her audience: "No one can drive this scenic highway without feeling a deep sense of gratitude for such a lush, green land and a rush of pride in man's increasing determination to keep it within eyesight of the motorist. "I need not enumerate all of the individual and organized leadership from governors to garden clubs; from agencies to engineers, that go into creating the scenic superhighways. This
