Letter To The Editor

To the Editor;

I should like to reply to the

editorial printed in the Banner of Friday 30 April. I am told that recently another article against fluoridation of municipal water supplies appeared in the Banner. I feel that it is too bad that such publicity has appeared locally against such a valuable and important health measure. I am daily appalled at the amount of tooth decay which 1 see in residents of our county. There would be over 60 per cent less if everyone drank water with 1 part per

million of fluoride in it.

I found nine different articles or abstracts of articles. I also looked up the subject in a 1964 textbook on Diseases of Chil-

dren.

The editorial in the Banner made at least eight points which I have answered out of order for better organization. Let me take them one by one: i Statement No. 8: No scientific organization has endorsed

fluoridation.

Answer: I don't know them all, but the following scientific organizations are officially on record as being In favor of fluoridation of public water supplies: The American Dental Association. The American Medical Associtaion, The American Academy of Pediatrics. The United States Public Health Service, The World Health Organization. Statement No. 6: No one has ever proved that fluorine is an essential element in the nutrition of any plant or animals. Answer: I don’t know what plants have to do with the subject at hand. However, concerning the human animal, I turned to my 1964 textbook on children's diseases and find fluorides listed under the nutritionally important minerals. It states that a deficiency of fluoride produces a tendency toward dental decay. I suppose a person can liva with decayed teeth, so I suppose Dr. Forman is technically right. Statement No. 4: Fluorides only delay decay; 15-year olds

arbitrarily established, that is quite false. Less than 6/10 ppm (parts per million) does not reduce decay. Above 2 ppm produces an increasing percentage of mottling of the teeth which is unsightly but not harmful. Statements No. 1 and 7: Fluoridation causes an immediate increase in Mongoloid babies; and it is hard on water

pipes.

Answer: My only reference book here is my trusty textbook and there is not one word of support there for the statement about the mongoloid babies. With regard to the trouble with the pipes, it seems to me that this is not a major factor becaues of the many communities which have had fluoridat-

The defenders took two heart tricks and made me ruff the heart. I then led a low trump to

dummy’s king.

Normally, East takes the ace of trumps and returns a club. Declarer then leads the low trump from dummy and wonders wether to play the queen or the nine from the South hand. If West’s play of the ten of spades on the first trump trick means that he started with a singleton trump, declarer can win a finesse with the nine of spades on the second trump trick. The trouble is that this finesse does no great good. East would still have J-7 of spades

but I can't put my fingers on them at thia moment) 1922 communities in the U.S. with a total population of 37,058,385 persons were drinking fluoridated water, some for as long as 15 years. No health hazard due to the fluorides has been discovered. The U. S. Public Health Service has estimated the cost of this Important health measure at about 10 cents per person per year. I don't know what is behind Dr. Forman's false attack on fluoridation. It seems incredible to me that such differences in viewpoint can occur. It would be interetsing to ask him. But he is doing a disservice to the health of the nation by his activities. I am for fluoridation of public water supplies. Ask

South’s percentage play, therefore, Is to play the queen of spades in the hope that West’s ten of spades was played from the doubleton J-10. Since this is a familiar situation, one that I have known for more than twenty years, I was going to make the winning play in the trump suit. Unfortunately for me, Joe Cohen held the East cards. When I led the first round of trumps to dummy’s king, Cohen innocently played the three of trumps instead of winning with the ace. When I then returned the low trump from dummy, Cohen innocently played the seven of trumps. It was "obvious” to me that West had the ace of trumps. My only hope was that West had started with the doubleton A10, so I finessed with the nine of trumps and lost my game contract. It’s getting so you can't trust anybody in Hollywood anymore. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with 1 NT (16 to 18 points), and the next player passes. You hold: Spade Q 9 8 6 5 4 Heart 5 2 Diamond K 6 5 Club 7 4. What do you eay? Answer: Bid two spades. Since you have only 5 points, the combined count is only 21 to 23 points, which is not enough for game. If partner can raise two spades, showing 18 points and a good spade fit, you can go on; otherwise you will be satisfied to play the hand at a safe part-score contract.
