A UN Collection Of Good Recipes

By JOAN O’SULLIVAN What does it take to compile a cookbook? Curiosity, stamina, study, sleuthing, a good appetite, strong stomach and ingenuity. Barbara Kraus, who compiled and edited “The Cookbook of the United Nations." which will be published October 24th, UN Day, needed plenty of

the latter.

Kitchen Spy A blonde, beautiful Mata Hari, who’s been spying on the kitchens of UN delegates for the past five years, Barbara has enjoyed meals in any language you can name.. Eating was a pleasure but the subsequent recipe - recording sessions presented problems. Thg language barrier was doubly difficult because cooking terms are hard to translate. What’s “ 1/4 c." in Urdu? But Barbara lured translators into foreign kitchens and, when she couldn’t, charmed cooks into recording recipes on tape for later translation.

HANNIBAL. Mo. UPI — The Mississippi River flood was on the wane today at the end of a

Levees across the river from here were being patrolled around the clock. But civil defense officials and other authorities said the battle against the worst flooding in the region’s history was all but over.
