Gromyko in Paris last week seem to have convinced both sides that there are geed prospects of their being able to do political business with each
other.
No startling new agreements developed. Gromyko flew back to Moscow with nothing like a blueprint for a “Paris-Moscow axis" in his pocket. But they did find enough of agreement such as on calling common ground to convince both De Gaulle and the Russians that it is worth their pushing ahead with further
talks.
These will continue during the coming months with Soviet Ambassador to Paris Valerian Zorin, who until recently was Gromyko’s chief deputy and who sat in on all the Paris discussions. French Foreign Minister Maurice Couve de Murville will fly to Moscow next fall for further direct talks with Gromyko. What Gromyko's Paris talks succeeded in doing was to clarify the issues on w’hich France and Russia agree, those on which their ideas are close to

Both want to return to the 1954 Geneva peace settlement that was supposed to have neutralized all former Indochina. Both want withdrawal of U. For example, suppose you lead a club and try a finesse with dummy’s jack. This will work if West happens to have the queen of clubs. As the cards lie, however. East wins with the queen of clubs and gets out safely with a heart. You win and lead another club, but luck is against you. East must get two more clubs and a diamond. ELIMINATE HEARTS A better line of play is to cash the top hearts and ruff a heart in dummy after drawing two rounds of trumps. This makes it unsafe for anybody to return a heart. Since you are in dummy, you must lead a club from that hand. The surest play is the king since East must hold the ace of clubs for his opening bid and will therefore be forced to

win the trick. If East returns a club, dummy’s jack will win a trick no matter which opponent has the queen. If East returns diamonds, you can trump the second high diamond and get to dummy with a trump to discard on the ten of diamonds. If East has a heart to return, you can ruff in dummy and discard from your hand. The contract is therefore safe no matter what East returns. mend a style in which partner responds to an overcall hloteat as though it were an opening bid. With a hand of this kind it is then safe to make a mere overcall of one spade, as shown in the diagram today.
