I • Peace Exists In Steel Industry PITTSBURGH UPI — With an agreement of four months bf labor peace in its back pock*t, the United Steelworkers un-

ion (USW) today focused attention on its own internal problems. The USW’s 163-man Wage Policy Committee (WPC) formally approved an extension pact with the nation's major producers Wednesday and Friday at 10:30 a. m. EDT, union tellers are to name the victor in a bitter intra-union power struggle. Secretary - Treasurer I. W r . Abel was expected to be named the new USW president, succeeding David J. McDonald who took over as chief of the union in 1952 when founder Philip Murray died. The marging in the Feb. 9 election reportedly was 10.000 votes. Despite their differences McDonald and Abel stood together smiling Wednesday as the USW Wage Policy Committee put its stamp of approval on a four-month extension pact with an 11.5 cent hourly increase. It averted a nationwide steel strike at midnight Friday. The committee had formulated a statement approving the interim pact by 2 p. m. Wednesday but it was not issued formally until a die-hard majority was allowed to read its objections into the record.
