would be closer to what they are presently paying than that of a new building. Mr. Grimes then asked again about the V.F.W. property. Mr. Sunkel said that he felt the present proposed site was the best location and that the Development corporation would want to develop it first. Councilman Grimes stated that the merchants on the north and west side of the square would feel left out. Mr. Sunkel then stated that the off street parking lot in its present proposed site would alleviate the street parking on those sides of the square. Councilman Eppelheimer said that the parking should be spread out and that any additional lot acquisition would put a strain on the budget. Chester Coan stated that the off-street parking was for the convenience of the population. He also added that the plan now calls for placing the displaced businesses into the Central Building after those Buildings are renovated. He urged the council to put the proposal into action. Councilman Ernest Collins introduced the 70-car parking lot resolution before the council. The motion was seconded by Councilman Poor. However,

the resolution was killed in the voting when Councilmen Grimes, Eppelheimer and Jackson voted against it. At this time Councilman Eppelheimer introduced the resolution for the 49-car parking lot and it was this resolution that the council adopted unanimously. The council also suggested that the Board of Works investigate the feasibility of acquiring the Harris lot and at the same time investigate the posibility of expanding the lot by acquiring the building to the north. Earlier in the meeting claims totalling $3738.19 were approv-

ed.

City Engineer Norton and Water Works Superintendent Brackney gave their March report* to the council. Athletic Director Lloyd Cooper suggested to the council that they make available special funds, facilities, land and provide a full time recreation director for the Greencastle youth. The council adopted the suggestion from the Board of Works accepting the Sinclair Refining Company s bid for gas and oil.

SPEAKING OF MONEY by Randall Collin* A local reader recently asked about the motto “In God We Trust” which appears on all of our coins and most of our cur-

rency.

Since this question may be of general interest to many readers we will briefly review some history concerning this

motto.

This motto first made its appearance back in 1864 and owes its presence to the increased religious sentiment which prevailed during the dreaded crisis of the Civil War. Salmon P. Chase, then Secretary of the Treasury, received numerous appeals from devout persons throughout the country suggesting and urging that God be recognized suitably on our coins in a manner similar to that found on the coins of other

nations.

Accordingly, on Novertnber 30, 1861, Secretary Chase addressed a letter to the Director of the Mint a Philadelphia, stating “No nation can be

The U. Some gunfire was heard during the night, but there were no reports of heavy fighting. The official radio, captured by army rebels early in the revolt, alternated predictions of victory with exhortations to the people to “rush into the street and fight for the revolutionary movement.”
