THE HOLY SHROUD OF TURIN Jesus: Is This His Face?

•f RAYMOND A. LoJOIE Central Press Association Correspondent TURIN, Italy—What did Jems look like? The answer and others may Hell have been found in the Holy Shroud of Turin. This ausspicious relic is believed to have been wrapped around His dead body after Joseph of Arimathea, along with Nicodemus, anointed the corpus with myrrh and aloes and folded it in this white linen cloth. “And he took it down,” wrote St. Luke of Joseph, “and wrapped it in a linen and laid it fai a sepulchre that was hewn la stone, wherein never man before was laid.” The linen is about 14 feet long, four feet wide. It was placed both under and over the body so that it contained two complete impressions. Photography in 1898 first revealed a remarkable and detailed negative image on the cloth. Since then there have been numerous investigations along different lines, including history, anatomy, chemistry, legal medicine, photography, art history and textile manufacture. And many times have baffled experts come away supporting it as a genuine and sacred relic. * • * SOME DISCOVERIES? Christ was at least 6 feet tall (but not more than 6 feet 2 inches) and was built handsomely with an athlete’s finelymuscled body. He was in his “thirties’* and wore a full beard and mustache. Experiments with live models, specially oiled and wrapped in linen cloth have been scientifically compared to prove these points. Verified, too, is that Jesus’ folded hands reached a point on Ms thighs which they could not have reached if he were lying flat The measurement would not fit the live models. When the models were asked to bend, at ence the imprint of the hands Jesus of Nazareth was bent in the position of a figure “S." Another question has been explained. The umbilical mark on the shroud was four centimeters, about an inch, too low to correspond with that of live models. Finally, one expert asked the models to take a deep breath and hold It This brought the mark to exactly where it was on the cloth. Since Christ’s lungs were inflated with air when he died, doctors were consulted. They

have confirmed this possibility. For if death occurs at an instant in which the lungs are inflated, a blockage ensues and they remain inflated. This would indicate that Jesus surrendered himself at the instant in which all the conditions of his earthly mission for the redemption of mankind had been fulfilled. “He, Jesus, therefore, when he had taken the vinegar said: it is consummated, and bowing his head, he gave up the ghost.” (St. John, chap. 19, v.30.). St. Mark (chap. 15, V.37) wrote, “And Jesus, having cried out with a loud voice, gave up the ghost.” • • • THE LANCE MARK to Jesus’ right side shows clearly as do the wound marks on wrists and feet. Spectographic and chemical tests proved the stains to be human blood. Photographic studies have shown that the scourging of Christ was indeed thorough. His body is virtually covered with criss-crossed clout marks. The two-thonged imprint of the Roman whip, each thong ending with two small lead balls, four in all. show clearly. What do experts say? Many believe it provides evidence of the resurrection. In various parts of the fine linen mesh there are double, even triple | imprints. There is, for one example, a fine nostril imprint. Lines of the chest are repeated

two and three times. Authorities state this was ths result of succeeding impressions upon the cloth as it slowly adhered closer and closer to the face and body of Jesus, perhaps as the spiced anointing mixture thinned. These impressions could also have been the result of the returning warmth of life and the first movements. • * • SEVERAL PRECISE historical records of the Holy Shroud tell of it from the time of the apostles and the holy women who found it up to the period of Constantine. Then, the Empress Pulcheria (399-453) placed it in the newly built basilica of Our Lady of Blachenres in Constantinople (now Istanbul). In 1204, it was taken to France by one of the Crusaders, Otto de la Roche. In 1349 it was involved in a fire but survived with only the corners burned. In 1356, the cloth was taken to Lirey in the French Champagne, and placed in a new church built for it. Wars followed. The linen was presented to the Duke Ludovicus of Savoy in 1452 and in this way becam# the possession of the Itatfan kings. Since 1457 it has been venerated in Turin, Italy. As you stand before it gazing ' down, it is easy to say, “I feel i a little as Thomas, the doubter, 1 when he touched the risen 1 Christ.”

are moments like these worth 20 an hour?

Mother has clothes to he laundered—after-dinner coffee to be perked. Dad should be a “nice guy” and help with the dishes.
