Open Wall To West Berliners
BERLIN TIPI — The Communists opened the Berlin wall today, permitting West Berliners to pay Easter visits to East Berlin for the first time since the barrier was thrown up nearly four years ago. Thousands of West Berliners trekked through the wall under a new Communist threat that the visiting privilege might not be granted again.
The official East German Communist party newspaper Neues Deutchland said that last week’s controversial meeting of the West German Parliament had endangered a new agreement on passses. which is scheduled to be negotiated in the next few months. “It would not be smart of our western visitors to believe . . . that all the excitement of last week now is gone and forgot- j ten,” the newspaper warned.
Q. What Is the meaning of hepatitis? A. Hepatitis Is an inflammation of the liver (hepar), caused by infections and toxic agents. A wide variety of bacteria and viruses are responsible for the infectious type. Drugs, heavy metals like arsenic and lead, may be the cause of the toxic type of hepatitis. Q. What is the most frequent type of hepatitis and how does it
occur?
A. Infectious
hepatitis, sometimes called epidemic or* catarrhal hepatitis, occurs most frequently in the summer and autumn. The cause is almost always a particular kind of virus that has contaminated
water or food.
Contamination is the key word to infectious hepatitis. Seafood grown in contaminated areas are a known source
of infection.
Public health officials are constantly on guard to prevent pollution of waters. Q. Does jaundice always accompany hepatitis? A. Jaundice usually accompanies hepatitis, but sometimes the discoloration of the skin is not visible to the naked eye. Studies of the blood will show evidences of liver inflammation even before the jaundice is
noted.
Q. Can other diseases resemble hepatitis? A. Mononucleosis, brucellosis, yellow fever, malaria and pneumonia are only a small group of diseases that can resemble hepatitis. It is for this very reason that no one without professional guidance should come to any false conclusion about their particular kind of disease. Q. Can hepatitis occur after receiving a transfusion? A. This type of hepatitis is called innoculation or transfusion jaundice. Sometimes donors who generously supply blood are infected with the virus of hepatitis without themselves having any symptoms of the disease.
Mew techniques are constantly being devised to Insure that blood “banked” for transfusion is free of contamination. Disposable needles, syringes and other appliances have materially reduced the frequency of hepatitis after transfusion. Q. What toxic substances should be avoided to prevent the possibility of hepatitis? A. The liver is one of the most remarkable organs in the body and can usually take out of circulation poisonous substances. Sometimes it is overwhelmed by poisons like carbon, tetrachloride, arsenic, chloroform and others. Occasional allergic sensitivity to drugs of any kind may produce toxic injury to the liver. Fortunately, drugs when prescribed are given in small quantities and the patient constantly observed for the earliest signs of sensitivity. Q. What is the treatment for hepatitis? A. Rest, especially during the period of jaundice, Is most advisable. The prescribed diet is usually rich in carbohydrates and proteins. Fats are limited to that derived from dairy food. A nutritious diet with adequate supplements of vitamins, especially vitamin B complex, is important. Alcohol is absolutely forbidden. In severe cases of jaundice and hepatitis, with the most discriminating judgment, ACTH and cortisone derivatives Are used in specific instances. Q. Are there any vaccines against hepatitis? A. It is the ultimate hope of preventive medicine that immunization against this disease will soon be a positive accomplishment. The fact that the virus of polio and measles has been so dramatically found leads scientists to believe that the virus of hepatitis will soon yield Its secrets to their concentrated effort.
