Steel Walkout Deadline May 1 PITTSBURGH UPI — With the deadline for a nationwide steel strike 19 days away, the United Steehvorkers union (USW) and the “big 11’ steel producers today entered a critical week of bargaining on a new wage contract In a climax to a bitter split at the top of the million-mem-ber union which had hamstrung negotiators so far. President David J. McDonald was given one week in which to get the talks moving. The edict was issued by backers of I. W. Abel, now secretary - treasurer, who apparently has defeated McDonald for the union’s presidency. With the industry reluctant to make a counter - proposal to USW demands submitted two weeks ago and the talks at a standstill, Abel supporters Friday asked McDonald to step
