DOCTORS, diseases and drugs can always be depended upon to rescue a dull dinner party from boredom. Unexpressed angers s o m etlmes lie dormant within the framework of the valuable doc-tor-patient relationship. In open forum on such special occasions, without any given signal, some of these hostilities are expressed with "wide open confidences.’’ The doctor, his attitudes, his method of Or. Coleman treatment and his fees can always be depended upon for lively conversation. There was even a time when hands were rubbed in sheer delight at the possibility that the physician might be made extinct by the antibiotics. Poor Communication Much of the distortion of the relationship between doctor and patient that provokes such lively discussion is based on their poor communication. Doctors and patients use a simple language as a basis for communication; yet each in essence hears a different language. Often the patient listens, but hears confused messages because of inner tensions and anxieties about illness. Long after a disease has been cured and health has been returned, the physician continues to be identified with painful symptoms, complaints and the financial burdens of long illnesses. General Resentment Too often the patient's general resentment to prolonged illness is associated with physicians, with nurses and with hospitals whom they feel have parasitically thrived on their misfortune. This, then, becomes the unfortunate end result of a rela-

tionship with health forces that should instead stand as & testimonial of man's dedication to man. • * • WHr DOES THE PATIENT CALI THE DOCTOR? In an excellent treatise on the Psychology of Medical Practice, Dr. Marc H. Hollender of Syracuse University wisely states, "Usually the answer is so obvious that it automatically follows. At times, however, it may be known by the patient, but either is not stated or deliberately withheld. At still other times, it may be unknown to the patient himself.” Dr. Hollender continues by stating that there are two gen eral reasons why the patient calls the doctor. The first is the patient’s urgent need for relief of pain. The second reason is the patient's need for emotional support using the doctor "as a comforter and a healer.” Detailed History In order to uncover the exact reason, the doctor undertakes a detailed history of the patient’s physical and emotional background. Only in this way can the physician learn the real and exact reason why the patient at that particular time chooses to be seen by a physician. Occasionally patients resent what they consider to be a burdensome and over-detailed review of their past illnesses. It is an interesting consensus of opinion of many physicians that the medical interview contributes as much to the diagnosis as does the actual physical examination. These columns are designed to relieve your fears about health through a better under* standing of your mind and body. Talcing Now Post WASHINGTON UPI — Deputy Assistant Defense Secretary Nils A. Lennartson plans to reign Saturday to become president of the Railway Progress Institute in Chicago. Lennartson, a 49-year-old native of Webster, Mass., presently serves as deputy to Assitant Secretary Arthur Sylvester, who is in charge of the Pentagon’s public affairs. The Railway Progress Institute is the spokesman for the nation’ railway equipment and supply industry.
