2 Tht Daily Banner, Greencastle, Indiana Monday, April 5,1965 Editorial-Wise 4 Vote Upset-In Russia! (From: The Chicago American) Pravda, of all newspapers, revealed Friday that Russian voters had just dealt the Communist party a severe jolt. In last Sunday's elections for local government offices. voters in 170 election districts of the Russian federated republic defeated the unopposed slates of candidates chosen by the party. It was the biggest voter revolt ever ataged-or at least the biggest ever announced by Soviet authorities—and it could hardly seem more of an upset if our own 1st ward elected a Prohibitionist. Almost as surprising is the relatively frank admission by Pravda. the official communist organ, of this setback for the party. We wonder if this marks a trend in Soviet politics comparable to the recent loosening-up in Soviet economics. The Reds have discovered that no amount of economic planning works as well as the old law of consumer demand. and are giving customers more of a voice in setting economic policy. They must be aware by now that the one-party system has its drawbacks, too; for one. it keeps all sorts of incompetent odds and ends in office just because they're politically “safe.” Now, if they'd draw the obvious conclusion and offer the voter as well as the consumer a choice—well, it wouldn't be good Marxism, but it would be a lot better government.
